Engels: "if the Canadiens are not interested in Guerin, they're foolish"

On his Twitter

EricEngels I'll go as far to say that if the Canadiens aren't interested in Guerin, they're foolish

What do you guys think?
Would you want Billy G in Montreal?
If Gauthier did sign him, where would he fit in the line-up?

I totally agree. We should have been interested in him 2 years ago, although most people on this board thought he was washed up then.

He's washed up and was 2 years ago, but who cares when playing with Sid.

He was effective playing along side the superstar... he would be totally useless on the habs roster.

IMO, right now, at his age, unless they want to trade either AK or BP (even then... ), we'd be foolish to sign him...

Where exactly would he fit in the line up?

if we take guerin, he only fits on the bottom six? even then a young guy would not be able to move up then.

I think Engels is way off base. He's too enamored of the concept of the "big guy", the idea that the Habs absolutely need one, and the player that Guerin was... but isn't anymore.

The Habs have only one serious roster need, and that's a tough-minutes top-6 forward, and I'm skeptical that Guerin is able to be that at this stage in his career.

Interested in the key word here. And that being said, I agree with Engels. The Habs need to be interested in a player of this stature. That doesn't mean that if the Habs don't sign him, they're foolish, because the price may not be right and Guerin may not even want to come to Montreal.

Really, what's not to like about Guerin?

-He's a multiple Stanley Cup winner.
-He's a big, physical player who was one of the best power forwards in the game in his prime, and still can score 20+ goals.
-He's reputed to be a no-nonsense guy and a good leader.
-He'd likely take a 1 year deal in the 1-1.5M range.
-He knows how to park his a$$ in front of the net, something guys like AK and Pouliot need to learn to do consistently.

I actually see him on a line with Boyd and Eller. Or if Pouliot or AK fails, Guerin could play with Plekanec and Cammalleri.

What would a year of Guerin cost?

Too much, one way contract is too much for this guy on the habs, He is washed up at least this is my opinion watching him in the playoffs recently(past couple seasons).

A guy like guerin would be a great mentor to the young players coming up. Especially if he plays on the 3rd line. Ask Sid what he thinks of Guerin.

Thing is I haven't seen much of him last year and not sure if he can still play. Maybe they just need a vet similar to Guerin who could mentor the young guys. Let me guess, you guys are happy with Darche doing that.

I thought he was pretty dangerous when the Habs played Pittsburgh last year. I disagree that he can't keep up. He's old, yes. But that's irrelevant if he can still play.

With regards to filling a need, anyone who can step in and teach our guys to go to the net, fills a need for sure.

We don't need to ask Sid when most of us have seen the guy play 20+ games in the past 2 years.

I don't hate the guy, I even grabbed him as a late pick in my pool last year. But you don't need a PhD in hockey to know he's not a good fit with the Habs, considering their line-up is already full and how slow Guerin has become (please tell me you noticed how useless he was against us in the playoffs).

Seriously...He was so bad during playoffs, he woulda been in the pressbox if those 2 Ukranian wingers weren't worse.

he would have to sign for very cheap and take a reduced role, like people mentioned, he is slower than molases.

Guys for VERY cheap, i wouldnt mind:

Belanger
Kariya
Tucker
Stempniak
Maltby
Mair
Mcgrattan (lesser extent)

etc, to give a verteran and/or grittier umph to the bottom 6

Yes, I'd take him for a 1.25 mil or less contract, 1 year. He'd play 3rd line but incase a mix is needed, he'd be moved up.

Andrei-Plek-Cammalleri
Pouliot-Gomez-Gionta
Boyd-Eller-Guerin
Moen-Pyatt-Lapierre
Darche

Uhh, sounds good to me. 3rd line sounds pretty decent.

Guerin would be a waste of time and money IMO.

He's old, and too slow. He looked OK playing with Sidney, but then again I'd look good and be able to fill the net playing with Sid.

Guerin isn't any improvement over any player we have in our lineup right now. The players we have right now, understand their role with the team and are fine with that. Players like Darche know that he's going to be playing on the 4th line, maybe a game or 2 on the 3rd line but he knows he's not going to be playing on the 1st line.....and I just wonder if Guerin would have that understanding or if he would expect to play more minutes.

So all in all....I say no to Bill Guerin.

He was such a habs killer in Boston, I always envied the fact that they had him. Now a days he isn't washed up but I guess far less consistent.

If they go for anyone I say try Stempniak out for a 1 year deal, couldn't hurt imo.

Do you think he would crosscheck Pacioretty in the face @ training camp? It was him who did that in Dallas few years ago right?

That's what I don't get...did any of the people who would actually want Guérin pay any attention to him last playoffs? He was actually a liability on the ice, I thought he actually slowed down Crosby.

This has got to be a joke...Bill Guérin?

I agree with the no to Guerin camp. The dude is not what he once was and would not have Sid here feeding him.
