For those totally ripping homer (and I'm no fan), shall we dig through the archives for the "Bench Hartnell" posts of last season?
Because bench Hartnell=trade him for Souray in your mind.

It seems Homer really tried hard to get a defenseman at the deadline, but Sheldon Souray?!

Would be interesting to hear why it didn't go down.
very simple. holmgren knows nothing of the salary cap. if the trade had gone thru , the flyers would have had to pick up $1.2 m in cap room which they did not have at the deadline.

I'm glad this deal didn't go through, but remember one thing guys, a lot of people were concerned about the lacking of goal scoring from the Flyers defense during the 2008-2009 season, and since Souray is one of the better shooting defenseman he would've filled a hole.

I can't say that I have been a Tambellini follower. What about the rumour is in his wheelhouse: the suckering another GM into an awful deal part or the turning it down part?

If this rumored deal was straight up Hartnell for Souray, Homer should thank Tambellini for saving his job. No matter how bad Scotty struggled at times last year, this would have been a horrible deal. There's a reason Souray is stuck in Edmonton. Homer should start sending thank-you cards to Him and Kaberle for protecting him from himself. I still have a hard time seeing Tambs nix this deal.

You guys do realize that in 08-09 Souray was actually quite good? 23 goals if my memory serves me correctly and solid defensive play.

  • Scott Hartnell put up 60 points (30/30) in 2008-2009.
  • Souray has never been a defensive stalwart. He regularly showed up in highlight reels for all the wrong reasons.
  • Souray missed 45 games due to injury in 2009-10.

There was just no plus for the Flyers in this scenario.

based upon what i have dug up--the deal was prior to last years draft--how far it got no idea

but it looked like it would have been Souray, Brule and a second rounder for Hartnell and a prospect

This was when Souray was coming off his 20 goal year and was healthy--another site that is sometime good for info suggests that the discussion ended with the flyers asking for Brule

flyer fans should be back flips if it is true that Tambo walked away--you guys get Souray--doubt you trade for Pronger

I doubt it would have been Hartnell for Souray straight up. Just because of the cap that couldn't have been the deal. The Flyers were right up against it all season.

Why would EDM not trade Souray staright up? It was probably Souray +.

How can people condem a trade that didn't happen? That they know nothing about?

We as a fan base have become the moaners Whats going on

same on the oiler board

back to the trade

through a person I know who works in one of the organizations in question--but not close enough to know the bang on details

it sounds like it was not a one for one deal. The deal was discussed during the previous draft and it sounded like Souray and either Brule or MPS and for Hartnell and a prospect and they may have been a pick on the oiler side--if that was the deal--I can see why the oilers walked away

the flyers should be happy as well--you guys get Souray no Pronger

That would make sense since they still had Knuble & Lupul at that time so Hartnell was expendable although the cap would have been an issue.

What do you mean "have become"?... You speak as if this is something new... Negadelphia has been established for a long time, and it doesn't stop with the Flyers.

As for this speculated trade; I fully agree that it is senseless to condemn or even debate something that we don't know has any base. We also don't have any details other than the two key names and possible others, but again all speculative. The time-frame is also not fully established... We have rumored leaks and no admission on the two sides. One other player alone going either direction could drastically alter any side of the debate... Plus was this one domino in a plan to revamp the defense? Was there a player lined up to replace Hartnell if he left... directly after losing Knuble and Lupul? Surely the offer of Pronger would have been too hard to not take up, and more dominoes would have to fall in all probability... This speculation is not a cut and dried situation that can be debated, IMO.

As For Homer; while I have not agreed with all his moves since he has taken over, I have to say that the proof is in the pudding... and we can't damn him for the unknown future. He has the chance to adjust and work around the Cap going forward; we have seen that No Trade Clauses mean little, and players can be moved... Since he has taken over the helm of a floundering ship he has revamped the players surrounding a solid core of draftees in Richards and Carter and turn a last place NHL team into a Conference Champion contended in one season. Over the course of his tenure they missed the postseason with the team he inherited and then won five series while losing only three... They have gone to two Conference Championship series and won one... They fell one cheap OT goal from playing a Stanley Cup deciding game. They have locked up their leader for a dozen years and brought in a player that has been a proven winner and leader in Pronger, who compliments a solid Timonen and anchors arguably the deepest seven D-men in the NHL. He has built a solid and balanced forward group in the process... He has yet to get that all important #1 goalie, but he has managed the position quite well with his choices and acquisitions in goal... Emery's injury may have took that category away from him, but in picking up a waived Leighton he got points, IMO... He has grappled with the Cap, but has not been alone in that, and except for a few major blunders -- such as having to sign tryout college grads and move Upshall under-priced -- he has managed to persevere under the Cap.

Until Homer actually fails I have to push aside any and all my disagreements of his moves and give him a nod for what he has done... I can't see us raking him over the coals for the coming season -- we did that last year and see what happened with that team we *****ed about... and I was a major complainer there -- nor can we blast him for a speculated trade that never was made.

Well, anyone that was aware of the reasons for his play but couldn't talk about it on this board remained loyal to him.
