Briere Ready to Carry Over Playoff Success

http://www.csnphilly.com/08/27/10/bP...096&feedID=704

Quote:
A leaner Danny Briere returned from his summer hiatus in Quebec to the area this weekend.

Briere, who had 26 goals in the regular season and was easily the Flyers’ most effective centerman in the playoffs with a club record 30 points, comes into training camp next month at 170 pounds – right where he was during spring.

“I had some personal issues to deal with during the first half of the season last year and I lost a lot of weight,” said Briere, who was one of four Flyers with significant off-ice issues last season.

“I was able to gain a little bit more going down the stretch. But I’m still about 10 pounds lighter than I have been the last three training camps. After the way things went in the playoffs last year I decided it worked out well at this weight, and I wanted to stay at this weight.”

Because lighter means faster.

Briere, Hartnell, and Cote all went through divorces... right? Who is the 4th?

I will say that Briere deciding to come in light to camp is a bit disconcerting because I doubt he was "fat" and there will be muscle loss over the course of the season, just the way it goes.

There was unconfirmed chatter mentioned on other sites including the Flyers' official team chat board during the season. I'm not sure if it was verified.

Both Hartnell and Briere separated from their wives during the year. Jeff Carter was not implicated, but judging by other threads involving worn out veteran Flyers, it was probably either Leighton's fault or Homer's or both.

Try to keep the comments on topic. We don't need to discuss wives unless something has been specified and verified.

Watched game 4 of the Bruins series last night. Briere's goal to put us up 2-1 (or maybe it was 3-1) against Rask was straight nasty. If we can get that kind of playoff production from Briere in the regular season.... watch out.

That game was excellent but his defence and penalties are a detriment. His point production was amazing but the stickwork is a big concern.

I'd forgotten how dirty the Boston players were in that game. They were doing a lot of hitting by the boards and then Lucic and Savard both tried to fight Richards but Gagne came in to even it up. I'm so going to miss him!

He'll only get 90 playing center, no way he gets it playing wing.

Hopefully he does. I don't expect him to do it off the bat, but hopefully he keeps on the domination and glad to hear he's away from all the **** he had in his personal game.

Honestly as long as he does great in the playoffs I could care less if he was only decent in the regular season.

Who will be the centers for this team.

Richards pretty much has 1st line center on lock.
Betts/Powe pretty much have 4th line center on lock.

So basically its Briere/Carter/Giroux and 2 spots to fill. What an awesome problem to have.

Mighta been because of the injuries, but yeah, he didn't show anything on the wing really. I wouldn't be opposed to giving him another try there if Giroux is suffering on the wing.

So if those are the centers, then what are the forward line combos?

Mine:

????-Richards-Zherdev
Hartnell-Briere-Leino
????-Carter-Giroux
Laperriere-Betts-????

???? = JVR, Shelley, Carcillo, Powe

3 spots and 4 players to fill them.

Who do you think that could be relied upon to step up from the Phantoms?

Nodl? Maroon?
*assuming a healthy roster

Tough to say. I wouldn't put G with Carter. Both those guys need to be handling the puck a lot to be fully effective. Lavy already said the lines going in to camp are going to be
JVR - Carter - Zherdev
Hartnell - Briere - Leino
Carcillo - Richards - Giroux
Lappy - Betts - Powe/Shelly

I think this looks pretty good. Only thing I would think about changing is maybe swapping Zherdev and Carcy.

If they move Giroux to center and Carter to wing I'd imagine they'd probably just let each fill the role the other was formerly in.

A little off topic, but has anyone seen before games the way Briere warms up? It is amazing/fun to watch. He just takes about 50 pucks after everyones else leaves the ice and just takes quick snap shots top corner and does it from both circles. By the middle of the playoffs, I started to realize Giroux was staying out there with him although his shot was not quite as quick and accurate. But then when you watch him play, he scores alot of goals on the exact shot top corner.

But I am hoping he has a big year this year.

He was first in points in the playoffs and 4th in the regular season.

I wouldn't worry about that.

And to think every year people still complain he's not worth the salary, even though he's consistently arguably the best playoff performer.

---

As for Briere's comments, it's amazing to hear this in comparison to Timonen's comments. It's like night and day.

I heard the 4th isn't a divorce, but their fiancee broke up with them. I won't name names but there were crazy rumors flying around this winter about those 4.

Being more than a one-dimensional player... and, if you're going to be one-dimensional, being dominant at that. Briere has been a good offensive player here, but far from "dominant."
