Yes, even I, a longtime Nabby lover, knew it was time to move on. Even if we had gotten him for <$4M.

Here's why I like this deal.

1. It wasn't about the cap space any more for D-men... the FA's were all gone, was going to have to be a trade for a forward who would free the capspace anyway
2. Now we have two "unproven/young" goalies to battle out for a spot - think Toskala/Nabby a few years back, that worked out pretty well for us. I like Antti/Niitty shootout better than Greiss/Niitty shootout.
3. If we do decide one guy has won the job, we have trade bait at the deadline (and over the course of the year).
4. If DW does decide to be a non-player GM and trade Niitty, then we've got Niemi, who, frankly, was just as good/bad of an option as Niitty.

This gives us a better chance this year than before the signing. We're not in rebuilding mode yet. Let's see who wins the starting job and reach for a defender mid-year to really shore us up. We'll be looking at the WCF's again, as long as nobody on the D-corps takes a major step back.

True that. I wonder why DW would do this?

To CHI: Niemi, Huskins

To SJ: Hjalmarsson

Obvious sign-and-trade.

Hjalmarsson not possible after an offer sheet, unless that was what your sarcasm was intending.
How about
Niemi and Huskins for Coburn.

unless hes making a trade yes it does. Hes basically going to walk away from greiss and he sucked up another 2million in cap space for a goalie that isnt better or isnt significantly better than the one he just signed to a 2 year deal.

I'm not saying it's a good move - it's not. But worse than signing Nic Wallin for 2.5 million? Really?

I hope it's a Shark chewing on a Native American. In all reality it'll probably be a Native American skinning a Shark.

technically its just as damaging, the dollar amount for Niemi is GOOD but I dont see how it solves anything. DW is filling a hole that didnt exist. Though if Niemi can fix his rebound control....

Now that would really be awesome. I've been hoping D.W. would make a pitch for Coburn for quite a while now and, this would be an excellent move.

Cap space is irrelevant at this point. Any player we'd trade for that would require that $2M on top of the players we'd have to send would probably be unavailable anyway, barring a massive shakeup to our core.

This gives us two options, neither of whom are slam-dunk goalies. I'd rather have these guys prove it, than be potentially stuck with a platoon of 1 unproven and 1 total rookie in Greiss. And yes, at this point, you may even consider dumping greiss. We have other keepers in the pipe and either of these two goalies is probably ahead of greiss in terms of development. In 11-12, one of them will still be our starter.

Not only that, but I feel better having one or the other come in should one of them get hurt. Sorry, but I never felt good about Greiss and I really feared Nitty getting injured and Greiss not being reading for full time duties. Apparently the Sharks org had similar feelings.

I do feel bad for Greiss however. Hope the Sharks do something to help this kid out.

Well it would have been all irrelevant if Niemi's agent had just taken this deal in Chicago. Now they're over there convincing themselves they'll make any goalie a star, which I don't agree with - I'm not buying what they're selling on Turco.
