I would love if the Oilers offered him a tryout at camp.

He's not 5'11. He's more like 5'8 or 5'9. He just doesn't cover enough of the net to be a pro. No goalie can make it at that size unless they are literally a Dom Hasek type talent.

The smallest I've seem him posted is 5'10. Most say he is 5'11.

The offical site of Genève-Servette, where he's playing says, he is 182 cm

182 cm = 5.97112861 feet

That's what he wrote. The point is the decimal separator, hence 5.97112861 feet is just under 6 feet, or roughly 5 feet and 11.5 inch.

If he has indeed that size, I can't see how it is such a major disadvantage. There are quite a few goalies in the NHL with a comparable size, and his play in the WJC has shown that he can play. Goalies seem to be by far the biggest gamble, and thus I also don't understand why no team picked him with a 7th.

182cm is just what is indicated on the web-page of his team. Chris McSorley, the GM and head-coach in Geneva, is clever and knows that he can market his young goalie better if he is 182cm instead of let's say 178cm... A tiny small but very effective "cheating" from this clever GM...smile...

Fact is... on the official-Swiss Federation-U20-roster Conz is listed as 178cm what is 5.10. Some independent guides have him 179cm or 180cm. On our official Central Scouting database he is listed as 5.10. He himself did declare him as 179cm 1 1/2 years ago. So maybe he did "cheat" a tiny little bit (1 cm) and he has grown since maybe 1cm. The detailed truth we don't know but if if I count all these informations into consideration I guess it's fair to guess him between 178 and 179 what is actually 5.10 or a hair above. He definitely is not a 6.00 goalie and also not a 5.11 what doesn't mean that he is not a good talent. But size is definitely a disadvantage in his whole picture - not a BIG disadvantage but a disadvantage.

From what I saw of him in the WJC, he seemed good technically, but didn't seem too quick. When you combine that with the fact he isn't a big guy, NHL scouts probably didn't see anything interesting in him.

another example of how watching the WJCs qualifies everyone to be an armchair scout.

I made a thread about him pre-draft (i think?) and it echoed the same thing. He's just too small and doesn't have the athleticism to make the NHL. I watched the WJC and was blown away by Nino but Conz was so meh to me. He really didn't look that good in my eyes. Yes, he had a ton of saves and helped his team win but you could just see how slow he was

Benjamin Conz

Why was it that no one drafted him this year? He played good in the WJ, could it be his size? What was it and do you think he will make the NHL one day?

This thread again?

Too small is the main reason. Also the fact that he never played great last year outside the WJHC.

Because the NHL is a corrupt place full of N.A. homer supporters.

He's an undersized goalie who plays deep in his net. He's been very fortunate thus far, but he's a boom-or-bust type player. Not what most NHL teams are looking for in goalie prospects.

He doesn't really have any attributes that NHL teams would be looking at. He has decent reflexes, but he's small and isn't super quick. He just doesn't project to be NHL material.

because he isnt very good and is small. the only reason people keep starting threads about him is because he had one good tournament.

I really like this guy (as you can tell by my avatar pic) but even though he is only 5'11 doesn't mean he isn't good. Look at Turco & Tim Thomas, they are small and have had great careers. Conz just needs to work with a good goalie coach and develop/adjust to the North American game style.
He has talent and is still 19. This year will be very important for him IMO.
He is most likely to be the starter for the Swiss again for the U20 and if he is able to repeat last year he will be in good position to be with an NHL organization at the beginning of 2012 season. Not to mention he is 4-2 with a team that was projected to be one of the worst teams of the league this year, with 3 shutouts and a .942 SV%.

In other words, if a team takes a chance on him he will either be a star goalie or a bust.

I just edit his ratings. I know he doesn't deserve the first overall pick.

Was also about to say that. I always figured he was good because he was so highly regarded in NHL 11.
