Maybe Dallas? They have $11 million in cap space. Niemi and Lehtonen would be a good duo for them, IMO.
This could make sense, although the Stars signed Raycroft who is a pretty solid NHL back-up. But if I'm the Stars I'm looking at any option that does not include having Kari Lehtonen as my number 1 goalie.
Inconsistant and injury prone is not a good combo in the Western Conference. Dallas should be looking at this IMO.

i dont think dallas wants to add salary witht he ownership stuff
I am going to say he shocks the world and signs with Hawks for 1 yr
1.5 mil and serves as 1B with Turco while Hawks ship out Corey Crawford to Calgary for a late round pick
Sadly the chances of this happening are probably very slim
I would love Turco/Niemi tandem with Crawford traded
If I'm not mistaken, isn't there something in the CBA that says we cannot do that after letting him walk in salary arbitration? I would think there would be...

I have the feeling that Montreal will sign him and then trade Price, whose contract negotiations don't seem to be going well.
In a somewhat similar position, PHX, I'm sure, has made inquiries with regard to acquiring Niemi's services, if only to prepare a backup plan in case Bryzgalov's re-sign price is becoming unattractive for the budget conscious Yotes.

That was something I was thinking about too. If you think about it Bryzgalov is coming off a Vezina calibre season and is in a contract year. If you bring in Niemi for a decent price to push Bryzgalov to have another great year it could be worth it. If Bryz buckles then you have a great tandem in the nets that might carry them to the playoffs.
Mason could use a guy to split the season with IMO. Mason/Niemi would be a solid tandem. if Niemi falls into the same sort of price-bracket as Garon, it doesn't seem completely out-there.
but at the same time...unless the Jackets can find somewhere to offload Garon, i'm not sure their budget structure would afford them the luxury of tying up that much $$$ in goaltenders when Mason is supposed to be 'the guy' for them, and Garon can be a pretty solid backup.
that said, i'd speculate that this report is bogus, intended to drum up some or *any* real interest in Niemi. it just seems like pretty much every single team is set in goal. not that every team is 'solid' in goal, or wouldn't like to add Niemi, just that cap-wise and roster space wise, there's nowhere for him to go.
it's like those annoying sliding puzzles, where you have 15 spaces and 14 pieces, but you can't ever get all of the pieces to where they're supposed to be because they're blocked in by other pieces...so you just get frustrated and throw it on the ground and move to Russia.

Since Bryzgalov is signed thru this year and the Yotes have a capable #2 there is no reason for them nor a spot for them to sign Niemi

Or you have 1 very sour goalie that cannot get the starting job since they are both capable of starting.
I hope Niemi does sign somewhere in the NHL... regardless of everyone's varying opinions of him... he's got to be considered one of the top 60 goalies in the NHL and to see yet another solid goalie (who has just won a SC on top of it) not be able to land a job in the NHL is discouraging from the point of view of a hockey fan in general.
Not going to happen. We don't have room for another goalie. It would eat up the cap space we need to spend on defense. DW said he 'got the goalie he wanted'. Our main beat writer said he asked about the chances of signing Niemi and was told "Not going to happen".
The writers who keep including the Shark's in this crap simply have no idea what they are talking about, as usual.
