All the signings of d-men, when we could have just done this...

signed either
Jay Mckee - a shot blocking stalwart
Christoph Schubert - a 3rd pairing Dman who can hold his own.
Mike Weaver - all about making the play....

Instead we sign O'Donnel, Walker and Mez - I like the Mez signing b/c of age.... but the other two... I am sure it makes sense somehow. We could have ALOT more room in the cap, if we took the cheaper option and still get what we paid for in the 1st option. UGH

This offseason has been WAY to long and I am making myself sick....

Played his best hockey in Ottawa. Was a complete non-factor in Atlanta.

Meh, could care less.

As for O'Donnell, the guy played nearly 19 minutes a game in Los Angeles and was a plus 14 for being a 38 year old. He wants one more shot at the Cup and he's a friend of Pronger's. You can bet that he'll be very vocal with the younger players on the D and help them immensely.

As for Walker, he's either AHL fodder or is a number 7 guy. It's too bad that people will peg him as the guy who Simon Gagne was traded for because that certainly wasn't his fault. Gagne was traded to clear up cap space and make room for JVR on the top line.

Either way, a top six of Pronger, Timonen, Coburn, Carle, Meszaros, O'Donnell is certainly one of, if not, the best top six in the league. I can certainly live with that.

I'm not sure many people are complaining about signing O'Donnell. I have to believe Walker gets waived, because we're not carrying 8 defensemen... are we?

I have always been of the opinion that we should have just waited an hour and signed Paul Martin instead of trading for Meszaros.

Love the O'Donnel signing.
Was fine with Mezaros.
Hated Walker trade but willing to give him a shot.

I like O'Donnel as well, I was thinking in terms of cap space.... that's all.

As I said before, this offseason has created many delusional thoughts in my mind...

The only out-right bad acquisition was Walker which still boggles my mind. Meszaros is arguable either way.

Good post. Didn't realize OD's numbers were that solid last year.

I agree about overkill on defense, I would argue however, that the best sign/trade was O'Donnell. 1M for a solid 3rd pairing guy.

we could have just done:

Gagne(5.25)-Richards(5.75)-Zherdev(2)
Leino(.8)-Briere(6.5)-Hartnell(4.2)
JVR(.88)-Carter(5)-Giroux(.82)
Lappy(1.16)-Betts(.7)-Carcillo(1.08)
Powe(.73)

Pronger(4.92)-Carle(3.44)
Timonen(6.33)-Coburn(3.2)
O'Donnell(1.3)-Marshall(.8)
Bartulis(.6)

Turco/Mason/Ellis/Biron/Niemi (2)
Boosh (.9)

HIT (58.36)
CAP (59.40)
SPACE (1.04)

*EDIT* ok, probably not 2M for Biron. I just think that if we offered 2M we could have had our pick of the lot.

People honestly believe that we didn't offer these free agents money to come here? Still boggles the mind.

Walker is useless

I believe that the Flyers misjudged the willingness of guys like Turco to take lesser one-year deals in hopes of bigger future payoffs. Everything I've read suggests that the Flyers held firm on offering Turco multiple years at $2M/per. He obviously thinks he can rebound in Chicago and get a contract next year that will pay him $3-4M.

Personally, I think he's wrong. The disinterest in Nabokov proves to me that the goalie market is just oversaturated. That's his gamble to make, though.

I love when people think they are a genius GM when someone gets signed and they say "we could have had this guy for the same price". First of all you don't know if he would have some here let alone for the same price and second, if your such a genius why weren't you begging for these guys before?

Just because you started the thread on a topic that has been beat to death doesn't mean every comment is directed towards you.

Here's what I do know - Holmgren didn't wait an hour until FA started to SEE if he could get Paul Martin.

And I hate to be "that guy," but I did used to work with Paul Martin's cousin - and they're close enough that Martin would get him tickets to games, and locker room passes - so he would have had family in the area. Jusssssst saying...

As the op. I would take responsibility, or look to hold it in this case, for Amy negative comments. I'm sooooo sorry you woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. You must have had the urge to open the thread and start ******** from your mouth.

If you didn't want to beat the dead horse then move on. I beat it because it's easy and I don't have the brain capacity to do anything else.

None of Martin, Volchenkov, Michalek, Hamhuis, or Kubina would have signed here for what they signed for. Get it through your head.

No, that was just a terrible comeback so I really don't have to come back with anything.
