Agreement reached on Kovy's contract, new cap rules
Acoording to TSN (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=332542), NHL and NHLPA have agreed on amending the rules concerning long term contracts and the resulting cap hit.
In the process, they are also accepting Kovy's $100M/15 year contract, which ironically has a cap hit of $6.66M (playing for the Devils...).
This will have a major impact on future contract negotiations. Exact amendment still unclear, but it should be sorted out by the end of the day.

well im guessing the league will accept the kovy contract, hoewver i highly doubt his cap hit would be 6.66m, wouldnt it be with the new rules?

Meh, call it what you want but if league rejected it, NHLPA goes to war. They made a deal, we'll protect kovalchuk and the current long term deals but this ******** ends now. The league didn't have enough power to veto the old deals+kovalchuk's and then bargain for new rules. New rules=we'll agree to leave the contracts as they are. People may say the league ****ed up but I disagree, there's only so much change you can make, and they make a big change(hopefully) in changing the contract structure for the better going forward. They had to make sacrifices to get it. It's called negotiating, not "it's my way or the highway".
But for the time being, it is an unusual co-incidence, for sure. Doubt anyone else has that exact cap hit though. Shame Miro Satan isn't in his prime these days as he would have been an ideal candidate for such a cap hit Wonder if he'll ever get to play for the Devils and finally make the lives of headline writers complete?

I agree, it was a fair offer from the league to the NHLPA and the NHLPA saw that and did what was good for the league moving forward and avoided a conflict. I like it.
In the meantime it kinda sucks that one of our eastern competitor gets a player like Kovalchuk for a cap hit of 6.66M but oh well..
Can we still wonder if Lou had any intention to help close up the loophole with all this?
The NHL really got what it wanted, they must have had a very clear indication from the first hearing that they would have won their cases on subsequent appeals. But even for the PA, I think while it might be "comfy" for players to get these lifetime contracts, the reality is they may be less good for the membership as a whole. Probably a win-win. Win for the current deals. Win for the NHL because it's all locked up. Bit of a win for the PA too in that they don't get deals cancelled, and can get more money up front into the players pockets again.
Also nice to see that the PA/Fehr didn't choose to just be obstinate on just *ANY* concession, just to send a message. I feared they might have fought just to show that they had fight in them.

Very well put. Lou pulled a fantastic move for the Devils here, making himself the last and biggest practicioner of the premier CBA scam- the front-loaded, fake-ended "we agree to lie" contract. Given that most of the other big cheaters- notably Det, Phi, and Chi, have already reaped big playoff results by fielding over-cap teams vs. legit-cap opposition, Lou's only done right by his own club, and also by the league. But then that's usually how things work out when you're a member of an elite boy's club. Of course you all win inside the club. Let the ticket buyers pay, duh.
The part I lament is I now get to watch one of the elite offensive players go spend the rest of his career putting fans to sleep in a half empty building. Respect NJ's success enormously. Wouldn't tune in to watch them play a regular season game against anyone other than the habs unless you paid me to. If one brand says "zzzzzzzzzz", it's Lou's Devils.
