Great season by the Huskies. I was worried about that game last night and if not for some good bounces for Bucky (mainly Hanowski breaking his stick with a wide open net to shoot at) the game could have gone either way.

You're right, the Huskies will reload and likely be stronger next season. Bucky will be decent but needs to win it all this year or it will be a while before they are a contender again.

Good to see Motzko take the team to new heights and make the WCHA even more dominant.

Huskies get a commit from NAHL forward Bryce Johnson from Topeka. Originally from Grimes, Iowa (Des Moines suburb) he'll be just the 2nd player ever from Iowa to play for SCSU. With Nic Dowd coming in from Alabama, it shows that hockey players are coming from everywhere and by God we are getting them from everywhere.
It also means Bryce Ravndalen will not be a Husky, he'll likely play D3 if he decides to continue his career.
This is SCSU's 2010 class

Kevin Gravel

You never know where a good deed will turn up. For the St. Cloud State men's hockey team, it's possible a simple gesture more than 15 years ago by one of their current assistant coaches started the process for a verbal commitment on Wednesday by Bryce Johnson, a forward from Grimes, Iowa.

Johnson, who played for Topeka of the NAHL this past season, grew up in suburban Des Moines, an area that in the past wasn't exactly a hockey recruiting hotbed. He attended games of the USHL's Des Moines Buccaneers as a youngster and one memory that stuck was of Bucs defenseman Eric Rud giving him a stick after a game.

"It's funny how paths crossed so many years later," Johnson said Wednesday. "I remember watching (Rud) and the team when I was real young and that sort of gave me the desire to play hockey myself."

To say he belonged may understate the contributions Johnson made during the season. The 5'9", 160 lb. center found himself on both the power play and penalty kill units. He provided offense for both units, with 5 goals and 14 assists on the NAHL's number one power play, and also popped in 2 goals with 4 assists on the penalty kill, leading the team in short-handed points. Overall, Johnson tallied 19 goals and 35 assists for 54 points, third highest on the team. His 35 assists ranked second on the team. And those were just his regular season numbers.

When the playoffs started is when Bryce exploded on the scoresheet, leading the team with 13 points (5 goals and 8 assists) and also in plus/minus with a plus +10.

Mitch Macmillan de-commits from Northeastern and commits to SCSU for this season. Gives us 16 forwards which seems high. I hope there isn't an eligibility problem with someone.

As i feared, someone is ineligible. KVSC is reporting David Eddy is out for at least the fall. That's a grades or class status thing (not taking enough credits to be a sophomore) and that's sad. Sorry, but I have no simpathy for a guy who can't get the work done, especially as a freshman.
Real dumb on Eddy's part and he will be missed but man kid, you gotta be smarter than that.

It's going to hurt as he clicked well with Roe and Mosey and now his spot will likely have to be taken on by a freshman, but as I said, no sympathy. Get the work done, show you care about your team.

I use to like Marvin until the Hit. I would of bet he would of went pro before this year. Going to be a heated series when they come to the Ralph with Genoway back on the ice. This is turning into a good rivalry between the Huskies and Sioux.

According to Motzko, all 3 of them had opportunities to go pro. I really don't think it will be that heated, the league knows about these two teams and they won't let anything happen. I do think our two squads are the best in the league though.

Maybe heated wasn't the right word but physical without the cheap stuff. Nobody wants to see anybody get hurt from something stupid. And yes I do have the Sioux picked 1 and your Huskies picked 2nd.

I started the conference preview below complete with wild guess standings. I too have have NoDak #1 and St. Cloud #2. If you guys want to do your own team reviews and save me writers cramp I'd be honored They won't be reviewed for another 11 days or so.

I think you guys have the harder schedule and I don't think your goaltending is up to ours so I have it reversed. Definitely means our 4 games will be worth a lot, anyone gets an edge points wise and that could be the difference.

Sure Eidsness can flop around out there at times but with every defenseman back and Genoway returning I can see him having around a 2 goals against this year.If so they will be tough to beat. But we will know early as their schedule is brutal for the first 8 weeks.

Your goaltending meaning Mike Lee with his terrible goals against average against the Sioux? I think his goals against in games against us is at about a 5.

It completely baffles me that people knock our goaltending. I know stats don't tell the whole story, but there's a reason Eids was an all-conference pick 2 consecutive years and is statistically one of the nations better returning goaltenders. He's not going to be all-world goalie, but he doesn't have to be... he just needs to stop what the defense can't.

Well said sfo. Eids is an above average keeper and it will be 3 years in a row that he is all conference. I forgot how the Sioux abused Lee last year.

Yeah Lee struggled at times, we also have Dan Dunn though, who knocked off the Sioux twice last season and was also an all-conference pick last season. It's not just about beating you guys though and we likely have the top duo in the conference, if not one of the best in the nation.
I'm also not saying Eidsness is a bad goaltender, just that I think our goaltending will be better this season.

People also tend to knock goaltending when they don't do well in the NCAA tournament, when it matters, and Eidness has not done well in his two starts.

I do like that hire as it pushes Gibbons to the D which the natural position for him to coach.

Another look at the freshmen.
