precamp - preTraverse city notes/stats

http://rangers.nhl.com/club/news.htm...id=DL|NYR|home

Quote:
Bourque dominated QMJHL competition, scoring 10 points in the four games. That included three-point nights against Chicoutimi, Lewiston and Rouyn-Noranda. In each of those games, Bourque picked up a goal and two assists. In his last outing against the Huskies, Bourque had a hand in all three of his team's goals.

Quote:
Outside of Bourque, the hottest Rangers prospect in the 2010 preseason has been last June's sixth-round pick, Jesper Fasth of the Swedish Elitserien's HV-71 team. The 18-year-old, who played against Bourque at the USA Hockey event at Lake Placid, N.Y., started the preseason on HV-71's fourth line. He went on to score five goals and nine points in 11 games that represented the toughest competition he had seen to date.

also mentions for Werek, Horak, Stacjer, and to a lesser extent, Talbot, McIlrath, Yogan, and McNaught.

That's what I was going say, that's really good. They play 55 games in the SEL regular season. That would put him on pace for 25 goals and 45 points.

actually even better. as this site which is only updated through the first 8 games.

http://www.eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=10967

he started the season with 1 goal and 3 assits through those first 8 games....so that means in the less three he has 3 goals and 2 assits. probably got promoted from the fourth line.

anyone in sweden care to comment?????

I had a feeling Fasth was a good scouting job. Obviously still waaay to early but good signs. If he puts up numbers better than Tedenby and Josefson did last year, this year its a pretty big deal.

Is that the Swedish preseason, or actual season?

I never give any thought to preseason stats, but I'm not sure how it is in SEL... like take the NHL season.. it's almost always the B and C squads.. I cheer for the prospects I hope make the team, but they're not playing against other teams' top NHL lines.. barely AHL.

Agreed to a certain extent regarding preseason stats. You never know what the coaches are looking at or what the players are trying to accomplish. But, by the same token, it's always good to show offense - in particular for a young kid trying to crack the squad.

As is borne out by what I thought was the most important point mentioned in the article:
Quote:
By the end of the preseason, Fasth was HV-71's No. 1 right wing, and he might well be skating on the top line when HV-71 opens the season next Thursday
While the numbers aren't important in and of themselves in the preseason, they are generally a byproduct of playing well - as Jesper clearly did.

Hopefully he keeps producing. Getting a late round gem would be nice

I think our dudes who watched the SEL said Jesper was a good pick, too.

Hopefully he pans out !

Wow. If Jesper is on the top line, he will develop nicely.

Yeah, he won't stay there when everyone is healthy, nor on the mens team either. I don't think that is a problem in any way though. Between the national junior team, the juniors in Sweden, farm team to the SEL and maybe 10-15 games in the SEL he will get to se the ice he needs for sure.

I've seen a lot of players develop remarkably well in a setup like that.

If he's producing and playing the game the way the coaches want him to play the game, would he still be sent down?

If that is the case, I'm not sure how that could be good for his development or mindset.

However, I don't know much about the player or his mental make-up and therefore I can't say that this could or would stunt his development.

If these healthy roster players you speak of return and he is still scoring at that clip on the first line going into the regular season, I'd be hard pressed to believe they wouldn't keep him on the SEL team, let alone the first line. what team doesn't want that type of scoring depth?

I understand your point, but the SEL while not being a extremely good league is still a league were the avg age is basically the same as the NHL with full time pro's.

My point is that you need to be really special to play in the SEL regulary at the age of 18. Think of MDZ in NY last season, he played extremely well early on and then slowed down considerably, and he was 19-20 y/o and Fasth is only 18 and he isn't really that early developed.

No doubt, he will be in way over his head physically. If he was playing well enough and producing he would stay. I think the problem is that there is no way that he will be able to play well enough for 55 games in the SEL, 15 games in the PO's, around 10 games in the WJC's with pre-tournament games et c. Thats 70 games right there.

I think a perfect mix would be a few games early on in the SEL so that he gets to know what its about, like 3-4, then play around 15 games in juniors and a 10 game loan-stint in the 2nd tier league around january, add in the WJC's and then if he could take the step full time late in the season in the SEL.

HV71, his team, is really stocked too. The competition is really high. But they are doing a great job and are keeping their kids happy. Hjalmarsson have already made it under thoose conditions, Tedenby is on his way and I think Andre Petersson have a shot at least. Hopefully Fasth will follow in those footsteps.

Its a really good first line he have played on, probably one of the easiest positions in Europe almost. And his team have darn good depth.

Isn't Jesper the pick we traded Bobby Sags for at the last second before Carolina was due to make a selection.

Plus we got a 2nd rd pick in 2011 on top?

If so, and I'm not looking to start the Bobby Sags debate again, but this minute showing is a little neat to see unfolding. hank was a 7th rd pick too...you just never know.
