Don't kill the messanger. On my way to work this morning a local french sports talk radio station was claiming that their sources were reporting that Calgary is putting an offer sheet together for Marc Staal. First reports are that it is in the area of 4.5 mil. a year. I have tried to find out more but nothing seems posted anywhere. This guy Patenaud who was talking is no Ekland, he usually has something to back up his talk! If this is true, can we afford to match this?!?!?!?
What would Calgary gain from this? Sather already said he would match... especially if it's in the 4.5M range. Doesn't make sense honestly. If the Flames want to get us back for Kotalik this isn't the way to do it.
Again, I am just sharing what I heard this morning. And if you think moving players and acquiring a second round pick is impossible where have you been?
I didn't mean bs in that you were lying, just that the news outlet probably was. Blackhawks have no reason to help the flames, so in order for them to get back their 2nd Calgary would have to over pay. Overpaying just to get back a pick that would allow them to send an offer sheet that would be easily matched would be idiotic asset management on Sutters part.
Let me ask you this: would you trade Staal for 4 first round picks? I think if he gets a $7 contract, it's worth getting the picks. (Obviously if the offer is $5, then it's not because he is paid less and the compensation is also less.)
Four high picks is better than having an overpriced defenseman. He's young, so we love him now, but in a few years, he becomes just another overpaid veteran.
