Flames: offer sheet for Staal

Don't kill the messanger. On my way to work this morning a local french sports talk radio station was claiming that their sources were reporting that Calgary is putting an offer sheet together for Marc Staal. First reports are that it is in the area of 4.5 mil. a year. I have tried to find out more but nothing seems posted anywhere. This guy Patenaud who was talking is no Ekland, he usually has something to back up his talk! If this is true, can we afford to match this?!?!?!?

I'm guessing 4.5 will be matched easily by the Rangers, and second of all, I don't think CGY has the cap space for this.

How would Calgary do this? They're already 1.8 million over the cap (Which jumps to $3 million if you put Backlund on the roster).

$4.5 mil? Sounds good to me.. I hope it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 7-8 years.

We can easily match $4.5. Unless it's a 1-2 year deal, Calgary would be doing us a favor by getting Staal to sign such an offer sheet.

I realize cap issue is evident, but who's to say Reagher would not be moved? Anything is possible.

What would Calgary gain from this? Sather already said he would match... especially if it's in the 4.5M range. Doesn't make sense honestly. If the Flames want to get us back for Kotalik this isn't the way to do it.

There goes the "get back'em by poaching their RFA's theory" since Cal has little in their system worth poaching.

Although they may be contenders for the 1st overall the next few years. Wouldnt mind finagling Larsson out from underneath them after they draft him.

I call BS. IIRC the flames don't have their 2nd round pick, as they traded it last year:
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=290103

*edit* I guess they would only give up a 2nd over $4,637,944, which we would match. The only way this would screw us over is how many years they offer i guess.

Again, I am just sharing what I heard this morning. And if you think moving players and acquiring a second round pick is impossible where have you been?

Isn't it Stapel who reported on Twitter one week ago that Staal was hoping for an OS?

Quote:
Not definite. Staal has no leverage, still hoping for an offer sheet. RT @MikeyG999 @StapeNewsday I guess we can expect staal to miss camp?

I believe you would have to get back your second round pick from whatever team has it now, it can't be another teams.

Staal going to end up making about that much anyway, if not even more so yea this is easily matched. Get out your shovels either way for Redden/White

I didn't mean bs in that you were lying, just that the news outlet probably was. Blackhawks have no reason to help the flames, so in order for them to get back their 2nd Calgary would have to over pay. Overpaying just to get back a pick that would allow them to send an offer sheet that would be easily matched would be idiotic asset management on Sutters part.

If it's not B.S. I am really surprised the Flames would make this move. I thought no one would mess with Sather, not saying he is a great GM just very much respected in the cirlce of NHL GM's.

If it is 6+ years for reported 4.5 mil, great.

If it is 3 or 4 years for 4.5 mil, then Staal will get what he wanted, and the Rangers will lose their star defenseman his first year of free agency ala Bouwmeester.

At that time we can just give him Dredden's money... or captain clutch... or Rozi.

Jeez, I just depressed myself.

assuming his game continues to improve each year, hell reach his peak within the next 3 years and thats when his value will be at its apex.

i would love to sign him to that 6 year 4.5 mil deal. that would be a good contract.

the 3 yr deal would be bad timing for us.

Let me ask you this: would you trade Staal for 4 first round picks? I think if he gets a $7 contract, it's worth getting the picks. (Obviously if the offer is $5, then it's not because he is paid less and the compensation is also less.)

Four high picks is better than having an overpriced defenseman. He's young, so we love him now, but in a few years, he becomes just another overpaid veteran.

Pretty sure Staal's agent said the offer sheet business was bogus...
