Yeah, the Red Wings have 23 other players.

Henrik Zetterberg - Pavel Datstyuk - Tomas Holmstrom
Johan Franzen - Valtteri Filppula - Dan Cleary
Jiri Hudler - Mike Modano - Todd Bertuzzi
Kris Draper - Darren Helm - Patrick Eaves
Justin Abdelkader, Drew Miller

Nicklas Lidstrom - Brian Rafalski
Brad Stuart - Niklas Kronwall
Ruslan Salei - Jonathan Ericsson
Jakub Kindl

Jimmy Howard
Chris Osgood

They are giving Meech a chance to catch on with another team before camp. Classy move.

Does this need to happen prior to Detroit formally signing Kirk Maltby? Or is this just giving Meech an opportunity to catch on with another team before camp, seeing as he is not in Detroit's plans?

Meech is a capable AHL defenseman, nothing more.

Numbers game, as he was behind Ericsson, Salei and Kindl for the 6th and 7th defenseman, aswell as a cap game, the Wings were right against the cap, with Salei, Modano and Hudler signings.

For some reason I could see the Habs claiming him. They only have 6 dmen right now in the AHL, he could go in and be in the top 4 in Hamilton. St.Denis would fall from the 6th position into a 7th scratch player, in case of injuries or rest.

I think this would be a good pick up for the Habs. If they go through the injuries they had last year, this guy could easily get called up. He has seen NHL playing time and in one of the most organized hockey styles of the Detroit Red Wings.

His cap hit wouldn't count towards the cap for you people that think it would could towards our 780K cap space. As long as he is in the AHL, his cap hit wouldn't count and we be a call up and insurance marker for the Hamilton squad as a few dman left to FA.

I think it would be a decent pickup for the Habs and especially for Hamilton. He might even develope well.

he was promised a chance to move elseware if Detroit had no plans to keep him. He resigned at a cheap rate, to help facilitate a move.

Maltby will be with the Griffans this year... Oddly enough, so could Meech if nobody claims him.

If He is waived... and Claimed and sent down, he has to be waived again..... Detroit will re-claim him and let him stay in the AHL with first call up in case of an injury. He gains nothing going to another teams AHL affiliate.

This is being done to help him catch on elseware in the NHL.

I don't see him getting claimed. Most if not all teams have a number of players they could see vying for the #6 spot and would rather see if a guy can stick in camp than claim someone.

Either way I wish him the best. Always liked him.

He would have to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL, however.

Meech is a decent plug/call up guy. Pretty similar to Lebda but can play forward if your team is desperate.

Could see a team like Anaheim taking a shot at him maybe.

They're in need of defensive depth throughout the organization

Meech could be an okay #6 on a fringe playoff team. I would be surprised if he cleared. He's gotta be better than Andrew Alberts.

Pittsburgh don't really currently have #7 D-man so I wouldn't mind them taking a chance with Meech. I'd rather have him as our #7 than Engelland. Meech has NHL experience from a great organisation and makes the league minimum. Good enough to be our #7 and even compete for #6 spot with Lovejoy.

Ha, trust me not even close. For one, the guy has no physical game at all and really that's about all you need to know for that comparison to fall flat on its face.

at 500k I don't see why Chicago wouldn't take a flier on him... worst case they throw him back on waivers after training camp... best case he outplays Scott or Boynton and steals a spot from one of them

1. Hes Terrible

2. Yes #s game he was 8th D-man and Holland promised him he'd move him it he ended up that low on depth chart.

3. Cap was an issue 2 as they are currently over cap(1 of Miller or Ritola still need to be waived)

I imagine Kenny tried to trade him 1st but found no takers(not surprisingly) for even a 7th rd pick, so he just waived him. He'll prob go unclaimed and end up in GR. and will be 1st Defensive injury call up
