Bakes is on top of things as camps open.

Aaaaand....they're off!

Training camp writeups around the CHL.

Camp Update: Kassian still strong; Foligno to lead pack?

Good to see Fienhage getting into the offense in the intrasquad scrimmages, but it will be more interesting to see how much of a hardcase he is physically over the course of the season. 6'4"/220lbs of mean? Yes. Please.

FWIW..

Kassian was dominant in the Blue vs. Red game. He was flying and dominating on the puck. Scored a beauty goal and worked really well with Alex Khokhlachev. While it's a small sample, it's a positive one.

I think he's coming back to Windsor and if he does I think he'll be hitting career highs. Hopefully he can focus on being a real offensive threat this season.

That's just what i hope too. Let BZK return to Windsor and learn how to be an offensive and not just a physical threat!

I'm reserving judgement about all these guys until I can see them in preseason but definitely some good reports from Kris.

Also, I'm stoked my nickname for Kassian took off

Gotta love this on Feinhage:

Quote:
“There are a lot of things that have impressed me,” head coach Guy Charron said. “One is his attitude. He’s a very upbeat young man. He’s happy to be here. It hasn’t been a difficult adjustment for him towards his teammates or his teammates towards him. He’s a real team-oriented guy and that’s probably from the program he played in at North Dakota.

Ugh -

Shipley to the shelf

Quote:
SabresProspects has learned that 6'2, 205-pound center Steven Shipley of the Owen Sound Attack could miss the remainder of the pre-season after breaking a finger in the first week of training camp. It's a tough start for the Sabres 2010 fourth round pick after reporting a day behind schedule. We'll keep tabs on the injury as details become available. The Attack opened their exhibition schedule without Shipley on Sunday, defeating Barrie by a 6-3 count.

BZK with a couple of big hits, held with no points, called for 2 penalties (one a saw-off), and at least one turnover that lead to a goal against in the Spits-Czech U20 tilt last night, per the game notes.

Any idea if the Ruzicka, Straka and Novotny from the Czech team are related to their NHL namesakes?

Straka is not, his write-up mentioned Martin as being not related if I recall my draft stuff correctly. I've never seen any mention if Jiri and Filip Novotny are related, but I've never looked either. I know Vlad Ruzicka is coaching the team, so it may be one of his boys. *shrug*

Zack Kassian recorded 3 goals and an assist in the Spits 5-4 win tonight over Sarnia.

http://www.windsorspitfires.com/arti...nets-hat-trick

Played on a line with Brady Vail and Khokhlachev.

I wonder if the Sabres might go for an OHL-based Russian if he really, really clicks with one of their own prospects?

A scoring center who meshes dynamically with one of their wingers? Then no.

Everything I've read on him sounds awesome. He just needs to put some more weight on that 174 lb frame of his.

According to this thread, he's ranked #40 so the Sabres might have a shot at him even if his stock rises...

But perhaps after the Zagrapan experience, an CHL-based Euro may still not be very enticing.

Per Sabresprospects.com, Shipley will be at camp and his finger injury is not as bad as expected -- a bruise vs. a fracture as originally feared.

The way they had it taped up you would have thought it was a break. No reason for him to be fighting there, but at least he's good to go for this week.

“It’s a great experience (being with Buffalo), but at the same time, you just don’t want to sit back and take it all in,” Foligno said after scoring a goal in a rookie camp scrimmage Thursday at HSBC Arena. “You want to make sure you’re here sooner or later. The sooner the better, but (you’re) just hoping for the best and keep plugging away.”

Foligno’s can certainly plug. His size – 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds – is his greatest asset. He’s a physical forward who’s working on improving his skating.

But Foligno knows his genes make him an even more attractive prospect. The family name carries some weight.
