Ruben's had an uncanny, distinct ability to give more years than necessary so far. Don't write it off so quickly.

Did anyone ever say that? FWIW, Happ has a 3.08 ERA since the trade. He hasn't exactly been a slouch either.

That was one of the demands Oswalt had, but teams balked and weren't willing to do it. I'm pretty sure he relented once it became obvious he wasn't going to get out of Houston if he didn't came off that stance.

Actually, I thought the initial demand was that he wanted that option guaranteed in order to waive the NTC, but then accepted $1M buyout as the alternative. So we still have that option for 2012.

Oswalt did not demand that his 2012 mutual option for $16 million be picked up by the Phillies, a baseball source told Nelson. Instead, if either he or the Phillies choose not to pick it up, his $1 million buyout will increase to $2 million.

If Oswalt or the Phillies decline to exercise the option, then the pitcher will make $18 million next season. But both Oswalt and the Phillies must agree on the option for 2012 for him to stay with the team that season, the source told Nelson.

Either way, the Phillies decide if Oswalt is with the team in 2012, and that's what's important.

I thought Oswalt already had a $3M or $4M buyout

Rollins likely won't be back in the lineup tonight. He's in Philly for an MRI. Uh-oh. Link.

That's true, but the Phillies as an organization are against giving pitchers longer than 3 years on any contract. It's why they were never going to re-sign Lee.

Joe Blanton has a 3.50 ERA (29 earned runs in 74 2/3 innings) in 12 starts since the All-Star break. Allowed 1 er in 6 innings tonight.

At some point after the game, can someone volunteer to open a new thread? This will be shut.
