CGC: Catch Tootoo

Today I got a copy of sporting news' hockey yearbook and for once they have the Preds at a reasonable position (3rd in Central) but it was the stats which caught my attention.

26th in power play opportunities
28th in PK

Add to the information from NHL on number of penalties, 1st in NHL with 8.7 penalties a game and I got to thinking about roles played and who's role can be questioned.

Jordin Tootoo

His role is simple, he's the little brother who perfected the game 'I'm not touching you! I'm not touching you!' He draws penalties, he also tends to cause them as well.

The Preds play a disciplined game where they keep their weaknesses (PP and PK) off the ice and keep it to ES. It works and the Preds came OH so close to creating a lot of threads on the Chicago Blackhawks boards within the vein of 'wasting talent'.

Where does Jordin Tootoo play in this? Based on my idea of a depth chart he would be permascratch #2 next to Belak in the Press box if Andersson pans out. Even if Andersson is a bust there is still players like Jamie Lundmark, Nick Spaling, Cal O'Reilly, Halischuk, Geoffrion ETC.

The top 9in my mind are set: Hornqvist,Lombardi, Sully, Dumont, Wilson, Erat, Kostitsyn, Legwand, Ward. So I want role players on the 4th line. As much as it drives some fans nuts, Nashville has a plethora of 4th line role players who can improve any team. Spot #1 goes to Smithson at center. His FO% is high and he's a PK specialist. Also, he's Trotz's man on the defensive end faceoffs. Spot #2 goes to Goc. He would be the designated first call up for top 9 duty. In my mind there is an imaginary wall between the top 9 and the 4th liners. They both have separate depth charts because of their responsibility. (Scoring and large number minutes for the top 9; role play and small minutes for the 4th line) Goc would be the man who can play on the top 9 when the Milwaukee call up hasn't arrived at the game yet. That leaves one more wing spot open.

Keeping with the the idea of two separate depth charts each depth chart has a gamble; Kostitsyn on the top 9, Andersson on the 4th line. If Andersson pans out to a higher scoring Smithson, he get the spot. If not, Spaling to give Nashville a line of centers. (Unless someone gets nuts at camp. The fight for jobs will be insane coming up).

With the 4th line filled and roles slotted that leaves Belak as the enforcer in the press box and Tootoo. Last year, Tootoo played a minimal amount of minutes on the special teams and the role is to draw penalties. But it goes against Nashville's philosophy of play. Tootoo's skill is to bring on the ice Nashville's weakness. PP or PK. I could make the case for Belak to keep toughness on the roster but Tootoo's role is a catch 22. (Litterally). If the PP is effective, Tootoo could draw more penalties but take a spot from a PP player who makes the PP better. If the PP sucks, Tootoo's ability to draw penalties is moot.

The spot for the extra forward would not help prospects because they would spend more time watching the game instead of playing the game. Lundmark could be a factor but his skill is more for top 9 and he has a 2 way contract. O'Reilly might be a fit, Nashville could always use more playmakers but once again a top 9 player when the team could use another 4th liner to fill the roster.

Just a thought I wanted to fit into your craws before camp. If Tootoo falters this pre-season would he be expendable?

I think it goes back to the debate of how much is he worth on the ice and off.

also, if the pp just gets to average, tootoo becomes much more valuble drawing penalties

Which leads to the question who do you sit to give him playing time? Do you sit a PK specialist who will improve the PK? DO you potentially sit someone who makes the PP better?

depends on the power play. if it is hitting at a 18.5 and up rate, you play him. lower, maybe you sit him

I suspect if Tootoo isnt playing a good enough all around game to warrant a spot every night then we will see him sit on the road and play at home where we will have line choice and can choose his matchups better and presumably we'd have a better PP and PK

Don't underestimate the energy the team gets when he throws his big hits. That wakes everyone up.

I agree, too. I've said for a couple of years now, what would it take to turn 22 into a pk specialist? He's got the speed and tenacity, maybe he just lacks patience. I don't know.

By the way, BFC like the title.

IMO, no chance. The guy brings energy to the building and team. You can just see the reactions the other team has when he is out there. They definitely play differently when he is out on the ice. But it is not JUST about that. He brings FANS to the game. More importantly; kids. We need that. He stays...

Plus, our PK is nearly set anyways.

Sully-Ward
Leggy-Erat
Smithson-Goc

and heck, even Lombardi can play a lil PK if asked to.

there have been plenty of times when one Tootoo shift has resparked my interest in a dying game

Am I the only one that thinks Goc makes the top 9?

But yeah, I don't think Toots is expendable just yet. We'll see what kind of year he has and if our team needs the toughness/grit

Goc or Ward would seem to be final choice for top 9; depends on where you skate Wilson. Andersson would be an outside candidate, too, I think. Hopefully we've seen the last of Smitty skating anywhere but energy line and PK.

Don't see how we let Toots go but I think at his pay-rate we have to get better performance and more contribution.
