NHL fines Devils

Quote:
The league announced in a press release Monday that they have fined the Devils $3 million and that the club will forfeit their third-round draft choice in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft as well as a first-round draft choice in one of the next four NHL Entry Drafts.
Wow.

They didn't fine them where it would really hurt though... no cap penalty. Just a fine and the loss of draft picks.

So the Devils got Kovalchuk for:

Cormier +
Oduya +
Bergfors +
A 1st in 2010 +
A 1st in 2011 or 2012 or 2013 or 2014 +
A 3rd in 2011 +
$3,000,000 +
$6.67MM every year for... well forever really.

That's a bit much.

True, but for an owner that by all accounts is struggling with money, an added 3 million is tough.

Is there any chance in hell they can afford Zach Parise when his contract is up?

It's a minor thing that gets overlooked, but the Devils got back Atlanta's 2nd rounder in 2010 as part of the trade. With that pick, they got Jon Merrill who was rated by most as a first rounder. Getting him at #38 really cushioned giving up #24; If the Devils had kept #24, I would have wanted them to grab Merrill at that point.

They essentially replaced Oduya with Henrik Tallinder. From another perspective:

Kovalchuk for 15 years at a manageable cap hit, Salmela, Tallinder, 38th overall (Jon Merrill)
for
Bergfors, Cormier, Oduya, 24th overall (Kevin Hayes), 54th overall (Justin Holl), an additional 1st, 3rd rounder in 2011, 3 million dollar fine

Yeah, the 3 million doesn't affect their cap. When they sign him it's basically going to be Kovy, Brodeur, Parise and Volchenkov with a bunch of scrubs.

You're right. Everything is just dandy. Especially when you guys have a skate today and Kovalchuk is just hangin' out in Miami. Anyway you wanna try and spin that into a positive also?

Arnott, Langenbrunner, and Hedberg's contracts are up after this year which frees up 8.8 million. Each of those guys is 35+, so I'm pretty sure the priority will be reallocating that money towards Parise. Rolston's contract will be done after 2012, so that'll add some much needed space as well.

Just pointing out that the Devils got a pretty good prospect out of the 2010 Draft out of the trade as well. I'm not sure how calling Jon Merrill a good prospect is that big of a spin. Or saying that Henrik Tallinder replaces Johnny Oduya is a homer statement.

Not sure if you've had flame wars with other Devils posters, but trust me when I say that I had my reservations about him since the trade. I can probably do a quick search on this board and find a post of me saying that Kovalchuk would have been a much better fit with the Kings.

So excuse me if I expanded on Tony's post to fill in the blanks with prospect names instead of draft picks.

Meh. It was probably an un-necessary comment, but I really do not like the Devils organization. Probably where it stems from.

Thats the hockey GM equivalent of taking two large tablespoons of castor oil, . . . and still getting sick anyway.

Couldn't happen to a nicer franchise.

That said, Kovy in a Kings uni on Anze's wing would have been nice, very nice!

Brodeur seems more like Hasek than Roy in terms of wanting to play into his twilight years. We'll see whether or not that's a good thing.

Devils managed to do pretty well with Scott Clemmensen when Brodeur was out for an extended stretch in 2008-09. Goaltending has evolved a ton over the last 15 years, there seem to be more than 30 starting caliber goalies.

Realistically, whether the Devils can improve their D will be a bigger factor in the next few years.
