Staal has no doubt taken note of the low ball/short term contracts that a number of his fellow RFAs are signing. That 6 year contract is starting to look pretty good.

you've got to think that the Rangers and Staal at the very least have a contingency 1 year deal plan.

Probably, but will solve nothing.

it solves him not getting traded. it solves him not being in training camp. for sather it means staal goes to RFA w/ arbitration rights and it could very well me much more expensive to sign him long term at that point. or longer term.

Hanzal signed for 2 years/$3.6 million. Very similar to Brandon Dubinsky's 2 years/$3.7 million.

Callahan's 2 years/$4.6 million. Look at what Perron and Gagner and got this summer.

Yeah the Rangers shortchanged Dubinsky and Callahan.

The Rangers have issues with evaluating players. They sign and trade for players and then realize the players can't play. Matt Cullen signed to a 4 year deal and traded after one season. Ales Kotalik signed to a 3 year deal and did not make it past the Olympic break. Trading for Nik Zherdev when they knew his contractual status and his pain in the ass agent. Giving Wade Redden $39 million over 6 years. 35 plus contract for Donald Brashear. 3 year contracts for Pat Rissmiller and Aaron Voros. Trade for Enver Lisin and then don't him a QO. That has nothing to do with "cap management".

Seriously doubt any of that is true. That blog doesn't appear credible in the least bit

No the idea is to build around these guys not give them away in the hopes that you get something better than what you gave up. Wait for the drafted kids, try and sign the RIGHT guy for once and get the hell out of cap hell. That's
my thought at least

Actually I hope it's BS because Richards will be a free agent next summer anyway.

Do we really want to sign Marc for one year contract and let him become free agent next summer if this is the only option? I doubt it that this is a very good idea for the Rangers.

I believe he would still be a RFA next summer if he only signs for 1 year.

First, that source does not appear to be credible.

Second, the rumor from that source doesn't even say that Staal for Richards is on the table.

It's two separate "rumors" they list:

1) Richards won't be traded at least until January.

2) Staal and the Rangers remain far apart and "

All this said generally speaking (Imagine it's just for unrpoven NHl prospects picks or eh players) what would your reaction be to Staal being traded?

I think about 1,000 profantiy laced letters at the least would be sent to MSG.

I think I'll take the word of the beat writers, who say things are in motion, and Bob McKenzie who says he'll be shocked if Staal isn't signed soon, over the word of yet another random POS hockey site on the Internet who claims "things aren't going well" but has nothing to back it up, not even vague sources, and is almost 100% making up a story just based on Staal not being signed yet

Just stupid

But we have the stalwart and trustworthy hockey journalists at HockeyJunkyard who say that things look bleak and that signing Staal is a lost cause for the Rangers at this point. Why should we believe Pierre LeBrun, who just writes for this "ESPN" website?

No! We are going to trade him for Bobby Ryan!

And next year, we will probably trade him, because he's a pain to negotiate with!

The Rangers and Marc Staal continue to work on contract negotiations that should yield an agreement by Friday's opening of training camp, though Paul Krepelka, the restricted free agent's representative, said yesterday by e-mail, "No deal is done yet."

It is believed that the Blueshirts and their 23-year-old, first-pair defenseman are working on a deal in excess of the four years for which the club owns his rights under the current CBA. Staal is coming off a three-year Entry Level contract he signed following his first-round selection at 12th overall in the 2005 Entry Draft.

Good news or almost and once again mentioning the likelihood of Redden's days being numbered.

Rangers, Staal working on long-term (but not Kovalchukian) deal that should be completed by camp.
