QUESTION: Has there been a lot of recent progress in the contract negotiations with Marc Staal?
SATHER: We have made Staal a pretty lucrative offer, and I don't think we're very far apart. I don't have an awful lot to say about it. Training camp is there to make the hockey club and to prove that you're willing to play. We have made him a very lucrative offer, and we'll see where it goes.
On todays (9/14) facebook story.
Considering Brooks comment. I hopes it's years more then dollars. But in no way will I be stressed over the dollars if the years are longer then 4-5.
This would be my guess. Pay more to buy out some UFA years, but Staal could easily be worth $4.5-5 mill if he keeps playing like he was at the end of last year.
Exactly... he's gonna get more than Girardi... and be somewhat over-paid for a yr or two... but after that it becomes (hopefully) a very affordable contract for what he bring to the table.
I don't think he's maxed out his offense yet but at the same time I don't think there's that much more there. I see him solidifying his defense/positioning/instincts etc. even more... maybe adding some more nastiness to his game and being a true shut-down type. Maybe not "feared" by teams but a bit more punishing.
I actually have no idea, someone on my timeline retweeted it so I thought I'd pass it along. Most of the reliable guys have been saying something's close to being done anyway, so if it's not done now then it probably won't be much longer.
I gotta think he's got a 6-8 year deal on the table now. 4 years is just too short when a 2 year deal keeps him as a RFA. He's got no arbitration rights so I'd offer him 3 deals and let him pick.
Option 1) 1 year at 2
Option 2) 2 years at 2 and 2.5
Option 3) 8 years at 3, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6
