I couldnt find the stats, but wasn't Marc one of the team leaders in points, even over the forwards when we sent him back for his final year in Sudbury?

I belive he was a Man amongst boys that year producing at a above average clip. You would have to imagine that translates in a few years as he developes and adjusts to this league.

no, but he was the MVP of the playoffs despite being on the winning team...and he was top 4 in playoff scoring. hes got some offensive talent...not near MDZ level, but 30-35 points should be the norm for him once he reaches his prime. along with rock solid elite level defense.

I think he has a 45 point ceiling. He WAS in the top-10 for ES points by a dman this year, so I wouldn't say 40 with PP time is a stretch.

If McDonagh plays well for this year, hopefully he can take a bit of PK time from Staal so that Staal can have a bit more PP time without being overworked.

I just hope MCD gets a fair chance to win the 6th spot in camp, with Semenov, Eminger, XLB, Gilroy, and Redden still hanging around there will be competition. There are a lot of defenseman in camp, he needs to play with a quality partner and get PK time to show what he can do. MCD should be better than all of these players, but if he has a bad camp I doubt they hesitate to sign one of Semenov or XLB and start MCD with the pack.

I think a 6 year deal is more realistic, somewhere in the vicinity of 4.5 - 4.75 per year.

3, 3.75, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6 = 4.625 per year
Does he really expect to make more than 5-6 mil per as a UFA even in 3-4 years? That's pretty steep. Komisarek, Volchenkov and Hamhuis didn't even command that much. As a player without arbitration rights, he can choose to take the shorter deals for less money then go to arbitration next year, get the raise then go UFA and get Hamhuis money and he still won't get a deal that's much more lucrative in total money.

Let's not forget that Staal has two brothers who've both won it all. This may not only be about money--this may be about having the option (especially if the Rangers don't improve markedly in the next 3-4 years) to play with one of them.

Yeah I'm sure that's something to consider...

However, having two brothers myself I know that I would never ever want to play on the same team as them. Brothers are really competitive and if Staal leaves to join either of them then I think in a way it's kind of like giving up.

Also, how impressive would it be if all three Staal brothers end up winning the cup on separate teams?

Just assuming. I have no idea what he actually wants

All the Staal brothers go to play for the Panthers or Blue Jackets or something, and thus the Staal dynasty begins.

Everyone is under the impression that the Staal's are all best buds that dream of playing together. For all we know, after they make their cliche commercials they might not say a word to each other. Like ThirdEye said, I would NEVER want to play on the same professional squad as my brothers.

And I have no idea either. But, sometimes the grass is greener elsewhere and Staal may just want to keep his options open.

Oh i agree, i'm just stating a reason why he might not want to play with his brothers. I can see him heading elsewhere for sure, especially if we continue to suck

That was my initial impression as well. Great comment; short, sweet, and to the point.
