The rumor mill has been churning for years that Penn State was going to add varsity hockey. Excellent news for local-area hockey.

I'm very excited about this, I just wish they had thought of this 10 years ago when I was there.

I also wish they had thought of this when they built the BJC. Could've put in an ice rink for what is sure to be a far cheaper cost of building a new building, because the Ice Pavilion just won't cut it for D1. Section E... ah memories.

Great news. I know my satellite campus (Penn State Berks) has a very good hockey team that is almost always nationally ranked in the club league, so having another squad at UP would be fantastic for PSU.

Cool, but I'm still gonna cheer for BU, though.

I'd like to follow OSUs program. But, it's not easy like football.

Well obviously I will too, but it looks like Penn St. might end up in the CCHA or *gulp* part of a future Big Ten hockey conference, so I can easily cheer for both.

Berks is ****ing nasty. Brandywine is always a top notch D3 club team too, if you care to follow the lower levels.

I worked for the Icers as an equipment manager back in the mid-90's. Excellent program they had there and Coach Battista was awesome. A lot of fun working with them.
Glad to hear but don't expect huge things right away until they get their recruiting down.

Recruiting is never too hard for a big school, especially if they play against Michigan/OSU right away. Yes, it'll take a couple years, but depending on the direction they go with coaching they should be competitive quickly.

And it's finally a local school for area kids, or even south into the Washington area, to have an option to go to closer to home, instead of going too far away, or not being smart enough for Princeton, or going to Canada. Not enough options for kids in the area once you get older.

Now they just need to put some ice in the bryce and we'll be set. Wish they did when I played there, not that I would have made a D1 team, but would have been nice to watch them. They could put ice on beaver for a flyers/pens winter classic and have penn st play earlier.

The plan is to build a separate arena for hockey.

Paying for Princeton is a bigger issue... as far as kids playing in NCAA, I'm not sure this will be that big of an issue other than exposure. Isn't as if New England schools are all that far away... especially if you're talking about an athletic scholarship.

Confirmed...

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print...790&type=story

Quote:
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Major college hockey is coming to Penn State.

Ending years of rumors and speculation, university leaders at a trustees meeting formally announced Friday the establishment of Division I men's and women's ice hockey programs to begin play in the 2012-13 season.

Happy Valley hockey fans can thank Terry and Kim Pegula after the couple donated $88 million -- the largest private gift in Penn State history -- to finance a new multipurpose arena to be built near the Jordan Center and help establish the men's program.

Pegula is the founder and former president of the energy company East Resources Inc., a major player in the natural gas-rich Marcellus Shale formation sold to Royal Dutch Shell PLC for $4.7 billion earlier this year.

The addition of men's and women's ice hockey will increase the number of sports at Penn State to 31, one of the largest athletic programs in the country among BCS schools.

"So maybe some day in these hills of Pennsylvania, we're going to find a Pennsylvania [Sidney] Crosby," Pegula said at the trustees' meeting in announcing his donation, referring to the Pittsburgh Penguins' star. "Hopefully, he'll play hockey for Penn State, and I think that's awesome."

Penn State has had a club hockey team, the Icers, since 1971. The team plays at the campus' 1,500-seat Ice Pavilion and is considered one of the top club teams in the country. The Icers have won seven American Collegiate Hockey Association national titles.

The school also had a men's varsity team from 1939 to 1946. Penn State has had a women's club hockey team, the Lady Icers, since 1996-97.
