to be honest im not really looking for the Rangers to add anyone unless they can somehow swing a deal for Bobby Ryan...other than that im happy with them standing pat and letting the kids grow.
Richards is still a very good player though. Former Conn Smythe winner. He definitely isn't elite but you can't deny his ability. I have a feeling he isn't going to get the type of money he is earning now next offseason. At the age of 30/31, his salary will probably come down to $5M. For that money though, I'm curious how the Rangers will figure out a way to add that to our cap. I guess you can replace Eminger, Prospal, and White for Richards. If all these basement signings (the under $1M we seem to be collecting of late) work out for us, then we might be in good shape.
Richards is a good player. I think Sather will try to sign him in the offseason. Richards is overpaid right now. From what I understand he has a great relationship with Torts. So he probably would want to come here. Hopefully they can sign him for around 5 million. Dubinsky-Richards-Gaborik would make a great top line imo.
The guy put up 90+ points on a dead team nowhere near the playoffs and people say he's overpaid....jesus
he makes what slightly more than gomez?
who is beyond overpaid. $7.8M these days is just too much for most players. It's not like Richards has consistently been a 90+ point player for the last several years. I don't think he has earned his salary over the last 5 years but if Richards posts another 90+ points this season, then he is a good position to maintain a $7M+ paycheck
for comparison, post lockout (and post TB cup)
Brad Richards $7.8M at 91, 70, 62, 48, 91
Joe Thornton $7.2M at 125, 114, 96, 86, 89
Marc Savard $7M (salary, not cap hit) at 97, 96, 78, 88, 33 (only played half the season)
Scott Gomez $8M salary ($7.357M cap) at 84, 60, 70, 58, 59
Gomez obviously is overpaid but Brad Richards isn't better than Thornton or Savard. He's closer to Patrick Marleau's $6.9M at 86, 78, 48, 71, 83. Richards is overpaid but not "Scott Gomez overpaid." Thornton is probably gonna get somewhere in the $7M-8M range depending on his performance this year and depending on if he wants to stay in SJ and take a "hometown" discount or hit the open market and get teams into a bidding war for his services.
I'm thinking if Richards gets in the
low to mid 70s (points), he'll probably fetch $5.5-5.9M
high 70s to low 80s, $6-6.4M
mid to high 80s, $6.5-6.9M
in the 90s, $7-7.4M
I don't know about Richards. He's 30 now. 31 when he's UFA at the end of the season. Giving him a 5 year contract for $7 mil per seems a little reckless. 3 years would be better. I'd be inclined to see where Stepan and Anisimov were at the end of this year before even thinking of committing to that.
