I was just fiddling around on cap geek. I'm not sure if bonuses can be deferred this year (or could they always only be deferred for over 35 contracts?) but you can easily put up a realistic roster with the Rangers only being $2 mill over the cap because of bonuses, and have Redden still on the team.

And it's probably entirely possible to cut that $2 mill off if necessary.

So...if the Rangers want to keep Redden, they can probably find a way to do it

Not thrilled with the deal Slats...doesn't this only buy 1 UFA year? He didn't have arbitration rights and the Rangers weren't competing against anyone here. You want your best defender to hit UFA status in the start of his prime years?

Ryan Callahan, Brandon Dubinsky, Dan Girardi, Tim Kennedy...smart contract structures...this...not smart. Who went on on vacation and left Slats alone?

This is what I'm trying to figure out. How can Redden make this team, without another move being made.

Anyone with some spare time want to post some different scenario's?

Mark my words!

This contract is not nearly long enough. at 28 he will be just getting into his prime when this contract will be expiring - he will then cost us an two arms and two legs.

I would have rather paid more to tie him for 10.

Who knows what the cap space will be in 5 or 10 years or if there is any cap at all.
So given today's restrictions we should have gone for max. it will be cheap in couple years time. We would have bought a controlled inflation.
Like booking a 10 year mortgage over a 5 year mortgage when inflation is at all time low.

Staal signed a half-decade long contract for under 20M. It's not a good signing, it's a great signing. Our best forward, goalie, and now dmen are all locked up long-term. More years would have been nice. Less money would have also helped too. But there's really not much to dislike about it unless you want to get picky.

We should seriously stay away from deferring bonuses to next season, as there will be no such possibility next year, and we might need that missing space.

Of course sending down redden would eliminate all that, but I won't quite believe it until it happens. I don't want to be too disappointed.

Great news. One year of UFA bought which is great too.

Can someone explain to me the RFA/UFA status? Like, how long is a player an RFA with the team?

Just saw this, after having to charge my phone.

Wow! Great deal! I was expecting over 4 mil per year and less then 5 years due to the fact they took so long to agree on a deal.

This is a great deal for both parties.

I'd rather see McDonagh and MZA up here instead of Redden.. And carry Eminger or Valentenko as our 7th..

I guess it is possible for Redden to make the team though.. ****....

You guys think that something could be worked around a Redden-Souray deal? Then we could send down White, Eminger, Boyle and fit everyone in basically.

Also if Redden is gettin sent down, if we really wanted to, we could call him back up for the playoffs when the cap goes away and he isnt owed anything. I dont think any team is gonna be willing to pick him up for half his contract on re-entry waivers anyway.

You can always tell a good publications by the way they act. I love it when Bob McKenzie and Pierre Lebrun come on here saying "I told you so" when they nail a story. Oh wait, they don't.

Let your work speak for itself.

This is a nice deal. Yeah, we'll have to pay him in 5 years but hopefully he'll be worth it at that time. We won't have the burden of albatross contracts and we'll have the room to fit him in. But seriously, we're talking about 2015. We have a premier shutdown defended locked in for less than 4 million a year for the next five. This deal is great.
