Current Roster Analysis

So let's take a look at our current salary cap situation.

According to CapGeek.com, this is how we currently sit:

FORWARDS
Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / Chris Drury ($7.050m) / Alexander Frolov ($3.000m)
Todd White ($2.375m) / Ryan Callahan ($2.300m) / Vaclav Prospal ($2.100m)
Sean Avery ($1.937m) / Brandon Dubinsky ($1.850m) / Mats Zuccarello-Aasen ($1.750m)
Derek Boogaard ($1.625m) / Erik Christensen ($0.925m) / Artem Anisimov ($0.821m)
Brandon Prust ($0.800m) / Tim Kennedy ($0.550m) / Brian Boyle ($0.525m)

DEFENSEMEN
Wade Redden ($6.500m) / Michal Rozsival ($5.000m)
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)
Matt Gilroy ($1.750m) / Steve Eminger ($1.125m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($0.875m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $65,621,667; BONUSES: $2,162,500
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): -$4,059,167

Now obviously, we are a bit over the cap.

Now, in my opinion, these are the only people essentially guaranteed a roster spot:

FORWARDS
Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / Chris Drury ($7.050m) / Alexander Frolov ($3.000m)
Sean Avery ($1.937m) / Ryan Callahan ($2.300m) / Vaclav Prospal ($2.100m)
Derek Boogaard ($1.625m) / Brandon Dubinsky ($1.850m) / Artem Anisimov ($0.821m)
Brandon Prust ($0.800m)

DEFENSEMEN
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Michal Rozsival ($5.000m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($0.875m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled using the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $50,121,667; BONUSES: $1,312,500
CAP SPACE (16-man roster): $10,590,833

This leaves several holes. There are 10 forwards, 4 defenseman, and 2 goalies.

So we need to fill 2-3 forward spots and 2-3 defense spots with a little over $10.5 million in cap space.

The contenders left are (sorted by cap hit):

FORWARDS
Todd White ($2.375m) / Mats Zuccarello-Aasen ($1.750m) / Erik Christensen ($0.925m)
Derek Stepan ($0.820m) / Evgeny Grachev ($0.816m) / Tim Kennedy ($0.550m)
Dale Weise ($0.700m) / Brian Boyle ($0.525m) / Dane Byers ($0.500m)
Ruslan Fedetenko

DEFENSEMEN
Wade Redden ($6.500m) / Matt Gilroy ($1.750m)
Ryan McDonagh ($1.300m) / Steve Eminger ($1.125m)
Pavel Valentenko ($0.850m) / Mike Sauer ($0.500m)
Garnett Exelby / Alexei Semenov

So how do you foresee our cap situation playing out?

Frolov - Prospal - Gaborik
Dubinsky - Anisimov - Callahan
Avery - Drury - MZA
Kennedy - White - Prust

Boogaard

Staal - Girardi
DZ - Rozy
McD - Gilroy

Eminger

I think when it's all said and done, this will be the squad.

I know. I just think Torts may like the "jam" he brings to the back-end. Especially as the 7th defenseman.

I dont know the exact line combinations but I think these are the players that will make the team.

Dubinsky-Prospal-Gaborik
Frolov-Anisimov-Callahan
Avery-Drury-MZA
Prust-Christensen-Boogaard/Weise

Staal-Rozsival
Del Zotto-Girardi
McDonagh-Eminger

White has a $2,375,000 cap hit. I think he will be in hartford. I hope Wade enjoys Hartford too.

I like the idea of adding some more scoring to the 4th line, but it depends how much they expect Boogaard to play. I also could realistically see Fedetenko beating out Kennedy for the 4th line scoring role, if they do choose not to do Boogaard Boyle Prust most of the time.

I really think White will be on the team but I see why he's an easy casualty

Its fun to guess but there is a good chance they do a 3 for 1 type deal

If they could just find a better Centre option

I see Kennedy and Boyle being kept around as the spare 13th and 14th forwards due to their very low ($0.550M and $0.525M respectively) cap hits... No one is going to blow $ on the 13th and 14th spare forwards.

just took a real hard look at the capgeek numbers in the first post... how sweet would it be to get rid of Redden's 6 and Drury's 7 mil... dayum!

here is my guess but with this they have space for White and Eminger. A trade will come even if its just for a draft pick. Also Fedotenko could have a roll of a deal comes

There's going to be a trade and maybe two. It's going to revolve around the surplus. If Fedotenko somehow plays his way onto the team there might even be more movement. Of the unsigned I think Semenov has the best chance especially if he'll sign cheap.

I've some doubts Grachev is ready. I wouldn't bet against MZA and Stepan has a shot. So do Weise and Byers with Wiese having a little higher upside.

On defense McDonagh is the guy to watch.

Even if he was ready, part of me still would want him to spend the next season in Hartford - if only to develop chemistry with Stepan and whomever would end up on their right side. If Traverse City is a sign of things to come, sign me up to see them paired up together.

Why are so many people writing off Aasen? He would need to have a HORRIBLE camp to not make the team.

It's our entire center situation, not just Christensen. E. Christ wouldn't even be in the lineup projections had we had a stronger center prospect pool. Gomer and Drury not living up to the brass' expectations (albeit unrealistic) really **** things up.

Christiensen is not the problem , the lack of a 1st line C is..........if u flip Christ to the 3rd line and replace Drury with Richards then the team is pretty good

Nothing can really be decided until the battle for first line center is won. We know Gaborik is 1st line RW. We know that Frolov was basically promised 1st line LW. That leaves a gaping hole between the two, keeping it from being a true first line.

Frolov #1C Battle Gaborik

I honestly think we'll see Christensen, White, Prospal, Dubinsky, Stepan, Drury and Anisimov get looks between Frolov and Gaborik during camp. This team NEEDS a top line, and whichever one of those players looks like they can drive it will get that spot.

The outcome of that battle impacts all of the others. If White doesn't nail down the top center job, he's useless at his salary. I honestly think he's #1 center or bust. I don't see Stepan staying with the big club unless he catches lightning in a bottle on that top line, either (similar to MDZ last year).

If White (and his salary) sticks on that top line, it's the automatic death knell for Wade Redden's time as a NY Ranger. If White goes down, then players like Gilroy, Eminger, and MZA all become much bigger waiver targets. We want Redden sent down. I believe that Torts/Sather are willing to do that. I do not think that they will do that lightly, and if they can keep him without hurting the team, I feel he will stay.

I just don't see where Kennedy fits. He's not a very good center, and even if he were, he's not a 4th line center, which is the only C spot he'd even be in the running to get. He'd be behind half a dozen players at Center. He's behind Frolov, Dubinsky, Avery and Prospal at LW. I just don't see how he fits into the roster (unless Prospal and/or Dubinsky play center, and Avery gets sent down to HFD).

That said, I just think it's almost useless to speculate on the lower lines. We won't even know who is competing for those spots (or how serious a chance they will have relative to their cap hits) until after the 1st line center is settled.

The reason Stepan has a shot IMO is that despite the fact he's not played an NHL game he's probably already our best playmaker at center. So I wouldn't write him off if only because that is the Rangers most glaring weakness. Zuccarello Aasen is a playmaker too but off the wing. At least that's the impression I've gotten. I think he has an excellent shot not only because he's got great skills but because he has the head for the game. Really I look at guys like White, Fedotenko maybe even Christensen as obstacles. Whether they make the team or not they're not core players.

I feel like Christensen and Prospal are the 2 odd balls in our line-up. If Prospal isn't playing with Gaborik, I feel like he is pretty much useless. If Prospal centers Gaborik, I don't know where that leaves Christensen. Anisimov and Drury should be the 2nd and 3rd line centers and I don't think Christensen is much use centering the 4th line.

But honestly, I would love to see what Stepan could do as the 1st line center. Hopefully he gets a FAIR shot at it.

Redden is done.

White, MZA, Kennedy and EC will be added at forward

McD, Eminger and Gilroy at defence

that's until Torts can feel comfy with a set rotation
