I saw the title "Pat Burns passes away" as the main topic of another board and tears started falling.

It's probably just a matter of days now.

I feel... empty...

Glad he's hanging in there. He was one of the all time greats. He and Dick Irvin Sr. are the only coaches I can think of who are held dear in both Toronto and Montreal (and Boston and NJ too.). I used to see him strolling down St. Catherine street, the friendliest guy in the world.

Pat Burns is alive and kicking. He does battle cancer but he ain't dead yet.

I wonder what animal should we compare sensationalist journalists with ? Hyenas ? Buzzards ?

From what I've read (on twitter), it was some "irresponsible blogger " 'CTV Ottawa' who had the original tweet.

Good to see Pat's still got the fight in him. The media should learn a lesson now and give him privacy so he can enjoy his family.

God this is dumb. So sick of scoop hunting journalists. I actually thought the same thing about FGagnon releasing his text about Gionta as Captain. Can't journalists just let official announcements be made by the people responsible for them? Their articles don't add anything except trying to get glamour for them and their bosses and brag to journalist friends. It doesn't serve the public (actually for Gionta to me it had the major feeling of a 'spoiler' before seeing a movie).

But this is far, FAR worse than what FG did with Gionta. You just don't do that with deaths.

Imagine if a blogger had fallen for what the mainstream media did. All the writers and radio hosts would be up in arms about how irresponsible bloggers are and they can't be trusted.

Actually it's the french media that, unintentionally, started it. The CKAC morning crew had something on Pat yesterday morning, something very emotional but nowhere near suggesting his death. Who knows, maybe the "blogger" got lost in translation.

So, today, Michel Langevin refused to talk about it any more since it caused so much damage.

Just to be clear, my saying that CTV Ottawa is a "blogger" was a joke (and, given that it was a joke made in writing, I probably should have been more clear or just said it straight). There's been a lot of BS in the past few months of people like Damien Cox or the Globe & Mail's sports media "columnist" calling bloggers irresponsible, untrustworthy, and such while going on and posting irresponsible BS like Cox' Jose Bautista speculation.

I think the title of this thread needs to be changed again. The report that said his health has taken a turn for the worse is incorrect.

According to Pat Burns himself"

"Here we go again," said the three-time NHL coach of the year. "They're trying to kill me before I'm dead. I come to Quebec to spend some time with my family and they say I'm dead. I'm not dead, far (expletive) from it. They've had me dead since June. Tell them I'm alive. Set them straight."

Agreed Change Title. It's a call to Bob Mckenzie straight from the horses mouth. Never count out the Irish.

I sent the following letter to the Gazette:

letters@montrealgazette.com

Quote:
Not looking for this to be published. I just want you to know that I'm disappointed in your standards. I can't believe you would post a story that a person is dead without checking any facts.

If I was the editor of Montreal's oldest english language newspaper, I would be ashamed of myself today. There are suppose to be standards in place. There is a reason there are fact checkers.

If you relied on the Canadian Press for your information, then you need to ensure that somebody over there gets their act together.

Today is not a good day for journalism. Its a black eye for journalists everywhere because of the low standards that you had today. I know your not the only outlet that report Mr Burns death but you need to take responsibly for your shoddy journalism.

I'm not sure if anyone on your staff is close enough to him to call him to apologize but I think you owe it to your readers to admit your mistakes and let them know what your going to do to prevent it in the future.
I think journalists and newspapers need to be held accountable to a higher standard than tweeters and bloggers. I think more people should complain to the legit media outlets that ran the story.

They just posted this http://www.montrealgazette.com/Burns...514/story.html

Since when is the Montreal Gazette relying on stories from Ottawa? It's an embarrassment.
