What will happen to the UFAs in 2011?

UFA

1) Andrei Markov
2) Roman Hamrlik
3) Hal Gill
4) Alex Auld
5) Mathieu darche
6) Jeff Halpern
7) Curtis Stanford

Available Cap space if all are released : 16,15 Million Dollars

1) He will resign this year and get a comfortable raise despite his injury.
2) Will be released he used to be good . Now is overpaid and we can get much better talent for much less .
3) Same as with Hammer he is okay but we can leave space to young guys to show what they are worth.
4)Auld unless he has a Halak backup year will be released and hopefully replaced by Ramo if he comes back to NA.
5)Darche is the 2nd oldest player on the habs . Unless he has a phenomenal year i think the habs will release him and he might just give up the NHL dream . Is a 4th liner will always be a 4th liner .
6) Halpern is a plug for Metro this year . He is old hopefully he can help the young guys evolve on 3rd or 4th line .
7) Stanford will always play in the AHL and he will most likely be released as an UFA in the summer of 2011 .

So that being said there is 9,15 Million dollars to give raises to Young players ex: Georges and maybe and hopefully ink a good UFA .

So my question to you is what do you think will happen with these players ?

Markov is the only player I see us, or want us, keeping.

Use the leftover cash to resign RFAs like Gorges and from the UFA pool: sign a big mean top 6 fwd. or number 2 DMan.

Darche will be kept due to Pauline Marois and pressure from the PQ.

Markov will be kept assuming he does not re-injure one of the following: shoulder, Achilles, knee, back, elbow, jaw, hamstring, arm-pit, nose, ears, toes, ankle, nut etc..

Markov back at ~ $7M. Gill back at $3M. It's enough. Depending on how all play, this year of course. I don't think there are any of them who MUST depart. Ramo could make Auld expendable. But you still have to play the year first.

I think Gauthier will go long term and get a lower cap hit, a retirement contract as they say. Probably not much more than his present cap hit.
At least I hope so but the Pleks contracts makes me hopeful our GM is not as scare at going long term as Gainey and his 5 year limit.

For sure, I could see that. But if they signed him $35M/5years I wouldn't complain either. So I wouldn't mind scribbling that number into my budget in the meantime.

Markov Gauthier is going to try and sign long term, and I hope we can sign Hamrlik on for cheaper for another year or two the rest are expendable

1) Andrei Markov - Re-signed at roughly same salary
2) Roman Hamrlik - Re-signed 1 year @ 3.5 M following a pretty good season
3) Hal Gill - Leaves
4) Alex Auld - Leaves after mediocre performances
5) Mathieu Darche - Leaves
6) Jeff Halpern - Leaves
7) Curtis Stanford - Re-signs for 1 year after good season with Hamilton; competes with Ramo for back-up in Montreal

All gone except Markov, and maybe Gill, but at 1.5M or so, can't imagine more than that. However if O'Byrne develops finally Gill should be expendable.

Then it's very tight against the cap as Gorges, Lapierre, Akost, Pouliot all have chances of getting pretty significant raises + we would need a goalie. It's a good thing that Spacek and Moen come off the books soon, because Subban and Eller will probably require decent raises.

I don't see this happening, and if it did, it would be for a much lower salary than 3.5M - He'll be 37 the next contract he signs, he'll be lucky to get a contract more than 2M

They'll probably try to hang on to one of Hamrlik or Gill. Whoever wants to sign for the least amount of money.

1) Andrei Markov
a must sign, hands down

2) Roman Hamrlik
Gone. Thanks for your service. Its more of a cap maneuver combined with the mileage more than anything.

3) Hal Gill
This is interesting. If you were to ask me last year at this time, I would say that he's definitely not signing another deal with montreal. I figured he was a short term fix. Today, I have to say that if Gill can replicate what he did last season then I would love to see him sign for another 1-2 years. He has established himself as a key leader in this group, its just a matter of how much gas is left in the tank. Another positive is that he will always be a cap friendly guy.

4) Alex Auld
meh, there's many aulds out there in any given year... dont care either way

5) Mathieu darche
dime a dozen.... doesnt matter to me

6) Jeff Halpern
No. The habs should be fine in the bottom six for the big picture. I like pyatt to keep getting better, I think white will get there too and boyd is good as well. Halpern is a bridge for these younger guys.

7) Curtis Sanford
Again, dime a dozen... doesnt really matter

I honestly don't think Markov gets a raise, I doubt he'll be a $7m player in 5 years. I think he resigns for $6m or even $5.5. He's had to fall in love with Montreal to go so far as being a Canadian citizen. I don't see him going to the US for big UFA money.

Montreal and the Habs are very well respected by old school Russians.

This...
Except I'd have Gill play the same role, at a smaller salary.

But his contract expires this year. 6.5-7mil wouldnt be out of the question.

Its really up to markov. He took a paycut last time, and he might figure that this is his last chance to cash in before he gets into the latter part of his career. We've seen this happen before.

Just because you become a canadian citizen, doesnt mean that you will stay in Canada... look at nedved or peter stastny.

Whatever the case, the habs have to re-sign him... and markov knows it

1) Andrei Markov
assuming he has a healthy season, every attempt to re-sign him, ideally in the 6M$ range, though I would go as high as 7M$ if necessary

2) Roman Hamrlik
3) Hal Gill
I imagine that one of the two vets will be re-signed on a 1-2 year deal for under 3M$. If Hamrlik has a good season, he'll likely get more elsewhere, and if he has a bad season he may just retire, so my money is on Gill.

4) Alex Auld
Depends on his play this year... if he is solid in the ~20-30 games he plays, don't see why we wouldn't bring him back unless he has a shot at being #1 somewhere (which is unlikely).

5) Mathieu darche
could very well not last the season if any of White/Palushaj/Desharnais/MaxPac/Schultz/Conboy/Avtsin force their way into the lineup

6) Jeff Halpern
depends... If he bounces back and puts his career back on track, he could be a nice piece to keep in the bottom-6, but if he bounces back to well he'll probably get larger offers elsewhere.

7) Curtis Stanford
could replace Auld, could go the route of Marc Denis.

Pretty much agree with this except Hamrlik signs for $2.75 million and if he leaves we keep Gill until Tinordi is ready to make the jump to the NHL.
