What a bush league operation, the Connecticut Whale? Switching team name, logos, and jerseys midseason? Jeesh.

Yeah, it's going to be awful. Baldwin should build an AHL community without the crutch of the Whalers.

The Whale? Yuck, terrible name. What was wrong with Whalers?

Doesn't the Hurricane organization still own the moniker "Hartford Whalers"?

Pathetic

What's more Pathetic is that the Rangers don't control the business operations for the team.

Unless I misread, it sounds like the Rangers willingly gave over the business operations of the team to Baldwin? Maybe they figure he can get more money out of the team, or they get some money out of it another way?

This name change is upsetting. Just terrible.

The Rangers didn't control the business operations of the team. They turned them over to Northlands/AEG in 2007 when MSG lost the contract to manage the Civic Center. Since then, the Rangers have been in charge of on-ice aspects of the team only, while Northlands/AEG managed marketing, promotions, ticket sales and the like.

This agreement, if it proves true, is simple a transfer of business operations from Northlands/AEG to Baldwin's new group. There shouldn't many noticeable affects from the Rangers point of view.

There's no money to be made by the Rangers/MSG in either situation. Basically, without the operating rights on the arena, they weren't going to make money on the team, so they wiped their hands of the business side and just focused on on-ice issues and developing the prospects.

However, one thing this does suggest to me (if it goes through -- Jacob's is a nutter with a very thin grasp of how the AHL works) is that the Rangers intend to stay in Hartford a little while longer. I can't see Baldwin going through with this assanine mid-season name change/spectacle without assurances that there will still be an AHL franchise in the city next season.

No, the city of Hartford owns the name, logo and uniform design, etc. Karmanos got the franchise, but not its history. That's while the Whalers retired jerseys still hang in the rafters of the Civic Center in Hartford, not down in Raleigh.

I like the idea, but why not keep the Hartford moniker rather than Connecticut? The Hartford Whale is nostalgic without completely trampling on the Hartford Whalers. The Connecticut Whale just sounds out of place.

Even aside from changing the Wolf Pack name, I blame the fans at UConn basketball games/etc. for the complete bungle of half-assing the name.

The shouts were always "Bring back the Whale!"

They got what they asked for . . .

I've never heard of a franchise in sports with a singular name, not that I got great track of pro-teams in NA. But it just sound odd.

Got it, didn't know the Rangers didn't have control of the business operations

What I find odd is that it will be done in the middle of the season.

I don't find it odd, I find it obnoxious. And I'm incredibly disappointed the league agreed to let them do it. It'll be a completely unnecessary distraction.

I cannot argue with you on that.

I'd say it's a bush league move, but since we are talking about the AHL and Lord David, that's par for the course.

At the end of the day, does it really matter? Therre's been plenty of minor league teams with far worse names (i.e. The Macon Whoopee) It's a ******* farm team. Let it go.

Truly a sad day for me... I remember back in 2000 when i used to listen to nearly all Pack games on the web radio, saved my $ like crazy, and flew over to N.A. to catch 7 Wolf Pack and some NY Rangers games... The logo, the name, the memories attached... will be missed.

R.I.P. Hartford Wolf Pack :-(
