Connecticut Whale.

Hartford Whalepack.

And of course, San Jose's new AHL team...

The San Jose Shark.

This decision just leaves itself open to abundant criticism.

What was going on in the conference room for them to come up with this.

On second thought. It's great.

The kids will fight even harder at Rangers camp so as not to be sent down.

Demoted/re-assigned to the whale tank. Not very inspiring.

What the hell is a "whalepack"? Sounds like a newfangled Jansport backpack that holds more crap. I feel bad for Hartford to begin with. Now, I feel worse.

Wow. Officially it's "The Connecticut Whale"? That sounds like a Mystic Aquarium exhibit. Redden might refuse to report just because of the name of the team.

Let's just hope the Whalepack don't end up like this...

All of you who are doubting the name change are clearly missing the subtle, strategic forces at work here. Much like a couple years back when the Angels adopted a ridiculous name in order to eventually transition to the name they really want, this is a clever maneuver by the team's ownership to eventually wind up with the name they really desire:

The Bridgeport Fudgies.

It's just "Whale", no plural? It sounds really weird to me.

"Whats your favorite team"...."The Whale"

This should make Redden a 'stranded whale' ... Which is alright by me!

When that's said... When will this take place ? What will happen in NHL 11 (Haha)

This thread turned hilarious.

Sure guys, laugh while I suffer.

But seriously, this is a bit disappointing. The Wolf Pack were my childhood (I'm 22) as the Whalers were the childhood of many others. Oh well. I have half a season left before I have to ask my friends if they want to come to the Whale game with me. Ugh.

"Whale" is the worst team name I've ever heard. Here are 3 reasons why this is stupid:

1) "Whale" is singular. Unlike Wild or Lightning, whale can very easily be made plural. The Detroit lion, the Chicago bear, the Anaheim duck... These teams are plural because they've each got at least one guy sitting behind a desk who follows sports. Apparently there's no guy like that over at the "whale" offices. Also, if the team is a whale, then what are the players? they can't each be whales if the team name is whale. I'm gonna go ahead and call Wade redden the future blowhole of the Connecticut Whale. I hope they have big problems with graffiti and people put "s" on the end of "Whale" every chance they get.

2) This is such a cheap and blatant misuse of the Whalers legacy that ownership doesn't seem to realize that WHALERS HUNT THE WHALE.

3) Good job of taking a dump on the city of Hartford by changing the team to Connecticut. You've already bastardized the team name with "Whale", now let's pretend that AN ENTIRE STATE is going to jump on the wagon and support an AHL hockey team whose real fans (the ones that are still around) hate the inevitably hidious, joke of a cartoon team logo that they're gonna come up with.

Quality over quantity. What if this singular whale has a laser attached to it? What would you rather have? Several normal whales or one crazy whale with a laser on it? I'm taking laser whale. Although, if the normal whales properly coordinated their attack they could possibly flank laser whale. I have to think on this.

After a night sleep, I like the Whale.

Imagine playing against a team thats like a big enourmous whale. You can like peck at it, but a big mass of fat will just pour over you constantly.

It will be like being sufficated by a tremendous amount of wet and sticky fat.

I'm curious to know how exactly the laser would be attached. Could the other whales knock off the laser? Could an octopus detach it?

It depends. Does this octopus have any weapons?

So I gave this some thought and I figured out how laser whale could defend the normal whales surrounding him and attacking at the same time. When the normal whales are getting into attack position laser whale heads directly for an underwater cave. Preferably with a large opening since he is a whale. Then he turns and points his laser at the entrance. This will funnel the normal whales right into the line of his laser fire since they have to enter through the cave entrance. It will also make it impossible for them to flank him.

Also, what is with Connecticut's fascination with Whales? Is the Lane Bryant Headquarters there?

I don't get the logic of naming the team "whale" in hopes of bringing back the whalers. The two are very much incompatible, as WHALERS HUNT WHALES. I don't get why the Whalers were constantly associated with Moby Dick when their name actually suggested Ahab.

Ah well, let's just hope the team doesn't have to travel too far inland, or they'll probably get stuck up on some beach.
