Top 9, definitely not. He could probably log fourth line minutes considering some of his competition, but the veteran Madden will probably take that slot. More importantly, the coaches will very likely want him to get a lot of play time and be on the first line, so they'll send him down. A lot of minutes in Houston will be better for his development than a handful in the NHL. He and Robbie Earl will probably be the first two players called up to the Wild in the event of another forward getting injured, though.

Talent-wise, he's probably top six, but he needs to adjust to the pro game. He'll likely start in Houston and be a callup for injury.

I swear someone's made this thread before.
EDIT: Here it is, hope this helps.

Why did no one post this article?

Quote:
Wellman, 22, who joined Minnesota as a free-agent collegian after two years at the University of Massachusetts last spring, looked impressive with a goal and three assists in 12 games for the Wild. His performance whetted his appetite, and the native Californian spent much of his summer working out with strength coach Chris Pietrzak-Wegner in the Wild weight room.

It paid dividends: the 6-footer weighed in Friday at 186 pounds, up from 173 in college.

"He's dedicated," Wild assistant general manager Brent Flahr said. "I think he ate six meals a day. It's hard; he wants to be a pro, and I think he's done everything right so far."

According to Flahr, Wellman was the top offensive player on an offensive-minded Wild contingent that won the Prospects Tournament last week in Traverse City, Mich.

I still think he's better suited as a wing...you gotta appreciate the fact that the kid is being professional about the opportunity he has; he doesn't look like he's taking it for granted.

I'm glad to see he has heart and is showing a work ethic. We'll see how he takes the news that he won't be at the big boy club to start the season off, because I don't see it happening. We got a lot more depth this offseason to which we didn't lose a lot of real respectable players as we did the last couple offseasons.

Definitely glad to hear he's bulked up and that he's so dedicated. If only all players were like that.

Law school sucks. I am a lawyer.

Get out now while you still can (and hopefully haven't put yourself into that massive student debt hole).

I think with PMB likely not ready at the start of the year, Wellman may make the team and get a chance in the top 6. He's not waiver eligible, so he could easily be sent back to Houston at a later date if he's not up to snuff or when/if PMB comes back.

YES!

...I wrote in tomorrow's paper inside a feature I wrote on Casey Wellman, unless Wellman proves he can play a top-6 role (which is unlikely if the Wild's healthy), the Wild's making it sound as if they'd like him to start off developing in the minors.

sweet. thought so.

well hope they play him at wing with the Aeros then because with Granlund coming and Koivu locked up I don't see a future for him as a top 2 centerman.

One of the knocks I've read on him is that he's just an adequate distributor of the puck, which ideally a center should do- although I'll admit that he's made some nice passes in the viewings I've seen him. I just think that his quickness, shot, and ability to find soft spots in the offensive zone fit make him a better fit at the wing.
