Marco Scandella

I was at the pre-season game against the blues and the highlight for me was watching Marco Scandella play. He looked good, rarely made a mistake and I was amazed with the confidence he had with the puck. I would take him over Cam Barker at this point (....and I know it is only one game and the first game and a preseason game, etc.).

I am just curious what everyone else thinks. Does he make the team or am I way off base thinking he should?

Well with Stoner and Barker playing like they did, it's more of a question, but I would think Prosser, Falk, and Bagnall would be more likely. The new regime wants their top prospects to get plenty of ice time rather than sit in the press box, so Scandella and Cuma are likely going to Houston.

Scandella (or for that matter Faulk or Cuma) are not enough of an improvement over Stoner and Barker to justify those kids staying on the Wild.

If the Wild suck, they suck. Let the kids develop in Houston. Dump the NHL bums. And bring in Scandella/Cuma/Faulk around when we bring in Granlund, Wellman, and maybe Gillies.

But it is just one preseason game.

scandella looked like a less-active zanon. sort of disappeared for me. i suppose that's a good thing.

He's not making the team and will be better off for it. That said, I'm sort of worried about how all of our blue-line call-ups are rookies.

Didn't Fletcher sign some AHL-vet/NHL-fringe Dmen for the purpose of call-ups?

Plus, call-ups are generally NOT bluechip prospects. Well at least on the Wild.

Bagnall is the only one I believe.

Noreau, Bagnall, Scandella, Cuma, Falk and Prosser are our depth, in no particular order, with one of them being the 7th d-man. And then you have Spurgeon who was just signed. So, unless I'm forgetting someone, Bagnall is the only one that isn't a young prospect.

Exactly. Besides Bagnall, who has played in 0 NHL games in three professional seasons, all of our potential call-ups are under the age of 24 and are considered to be young prospects.

I could see them signing a competent defenseman at some point coming up here, or at least I hope they look at the possibility of doing so. Although, if our fringe D-men are Stoner, Falk, Bagnall, Noreau, or Scandella, I'd have to think there would be a lot going wrong for us to have to call up Cuma or Scandella. Let's let them get top minutes in Houston for a while.

with them signing Jobke, Caron, and Spurgeon (all-around, toughguy, offensive respectively) i have to imagine some of the current crop in Houston will not make it to the Wild and will in fact be shipped out in trades or just let go if the junior guys keep showing what impressed Fletcher and company in the first place. Without looking i'm going to guess they're all too young to play for the Aeros right now, but the fact that they're sitting back there makes us deeper. Maybe if someone shows enough interest this season in one of our Aeros it won't be as devastating a departure as it would have been. (long term)

also shows Leipold is committed financially--sure, they're only signing bonuses but that is money he doesn't have to spend on players that don't exactly have the greatest chance of making it. Fletcher is transparently thinking long term and he's doing it without hurting our short-term and I find that encouraging.
