I think Dale Weise, Ruslan Fedotenko, Brandon Prust when I think ideal first liners.
And just IMO, but you shouldn't use draft picks on guys whos potential tops out at the 4th line, because they are so easy to come by. We got Orr off waivers. Prust was a trade throw in as was Blair Betts I believe.
more then being easy to come by players, if you draft a player projected for the 4th line that leaves you little to no margin for error...a guy that projects as a 2nd liner could potentially fail to reach that potential but still be a valuable asset as a 3rd or 4th liner
Fasth, Pashnin, Skokan and Zeliska have started their regular season games. There are also various tournaments going on in Europe, but I don't track those statistics in the stat tables.
Every year I try to pick a prospect out of the entire group that is waiting to burst and that is generally overlooked by Ranger fans all over, and even though I took a liking to Christian Thomas and had quite a curiosity about one named "Jesper Fasth" I think it's time that Ranger fans recognize a player who has been in the system and has not gotten proper acknowledgment. Not to blow up the hype train or try to call myself a "Prospect Messiah" but just to increase the general knowledge of a community that bleeds blue and wants to know everything about the players that one day might skate in MSG.
Just dropping some knowledge on you prospect followers. The new hit prospect you guys are going to want to watch this season (Especially for those of you who like following players in the NCAA) is Carl Hagelin.
In his final and senior year he will be Co-Captaining U-M and has Hobey Baker potential. Over the past 3 years he has grown as a player and has continually handed more and more pressure and has thrived at Even Strength, Power Play, and especially the PK.
In his first season he posted 11 goals and 11 assists in 41 games and was +18. The following season 13 goals and 18 assists for 31 points in 41 games being a +19. This last season he became a very consistent and dangerous player with 19 goals and 31 assists for 50 points in 45 games and was +20. Making his college career totals 127 Games Player, 43 Goals, 60 Assists, and 103 Points.
With speed to burn, a dangerous shot and good instincts on both sides of the ice, this is a very cerebral player who could potentially grow into something that not even the Ranger scouts saw coming. With the reigns of a team that has a chance at the Frozen Four he has mentioned that he has put himself in the type of mentality that demands a championship.

Totally agree. The great thing about Hagelin is that watching him is a treat if you are a true hockey fan. He is a great all-around player who does everything for his team. I got to catch about 7 of his games last season and he was very impressive, so much so that I wouldnt have been upset of Hagelin had turned pro at the end of last season.
My friend is a huge Rangers fan but he doesn't know his prospects too well.
Last year he watched the frozen four Michigan game. I didn't get to see it, and when I asked him how it was he was raving about Hagelin, having no idea who he was.

Cool write up, I almost forgot he was even a prospect of ours because all the focus has been on the new toy McIlrath and players who could have an impact on the team this season like Stepan, McDonagh and Grachev.
I'm actually surprised he hasn't been looked at closer by the Rangers considering he was drafted back in 2007. Is it because he intends to graduate?

All along Hagelin was set on graduating from Michigan. He said as much during his freshman season.

Also, where does he fit in right now in this organization? Leaving Michigan a year early to play on the third or fourth line in Hartford? Nah. Next year if/when he signs he won't have a ton of other players to compete with even in the big club. Byers and Dupont will most likely be gone, Kennedy, Boyle, Prospal, etc should be gone.
Going to back to Michigan will give him the opportunity to get a college degree, make a run at a national title, and to show skills to other NHL teams in case Hagelin doesn't want to sign with the Rangers (I believe Gordie Clark said they really want this kid after he graduates).

He's always been commited to finishing all 4 seasons of college hockey (for schooling of course) AHL I assume unless turnover is so huge that he finds space on the 3rd line. When thinking of this guy... Think Korpikoski for an easy reference. Maybe a little more energy and speed but I would like to see another strong year from him before I say scoring touch and finishing ability.
He's stated that its been his dream toplay in the "Big Show", I'm sure he will sign after this season.
CHRIS KREIDER, who was recently named the top prospect in the New York Rangers' farm system, is back for his sophomore season at Boston College after a whirlwind 2009-10 season, in which the Boxford resident helped both his country (at the World Junior Championships in Canada) and his school (the NCAA title) to championships. Big (6-foot-2), explosive with a terrific shot and NHL speed, Kreider will easily slide onto one of coach Jerry York's top two lines this winter in what could be his final season of college hockey.
Hagelin is an excellent student. Sports management major. He knows what he is. He is not a top line player. If he doesn't make it in pro hockey,he'll go into sports management. Being a hockey player and having his degree,he will get a job in hockey. Maybe he'll go to law school and become an agent.

Either that or a scout. I hear that he's a big video room guy and has a great mind for the game.
Tweeted, but don't think I mentioned it here... Mikhail Pashnin missed two games with a minor, unspecified injury. He was back in the line-up yesterday and played 16:33 with 3 shots, no points or PMs (CSKA lost 0-2).
Left-winger Ryan Howse, whose NHL rights belong to the Calgary Flames, scored twice, giving him five goals in two games. Centre Roman Horak, in his first game since returning from the New York Rangers, had a goal and three assists.
“How good was Horak?” a smiling Marc Habscheid, the Bruins’ general manager and head coach, asked rhetorically.
Howse, who is from Prince George, was quick to credit his Slovakian linemates — Horak and Robin Soudek — for his night’s work, but added “everybody played well. Every line contributed with hits or making plays.”
roman horak is a kid who can do big things. hes defensive awareness is something many would not have envisioned when he was drafted. hes not only improved, hes become a very solid 2 way player. i still say hell be a very good playmaker more than a shooter.
hes one of those guys that we will look back on and say, where did this kid come from.
