How many rookies make the team out of training camp ?

Yes its that time of the pre-season where the glass is half full the entire time, so the question is how many of these new players will make the team ?

Stepan and McDonagh would be my guess...Though I would love for Grachev to really break through here.

It should be four, (Stepan, McDonagh, MZA and Sauer), but, I think at least three of those four will make it.

Based on Devils's standards on what is a rookie, I'd say 20 to 23.

There is the possibility of there being four rookies (MZA, Stepan, Sauer, and McD) to go along with the possibility of five second year players (MDZ, Anisimov, Boyle [He only played 28 games prior in the NHL], Prust [His rookie year he only played 36 games or something like that], and possibly Gilroy).

If they carry a 23 man roster, that's almost half of the team having less then two full NHL seasons of experience.

I'm fine with that. Will be a very hungry team and I could live with seeing the young kids play and not make the playoffs.

I said the same thing last night. I consider this another year of transition. Integrate more youth, allow another year of growth for Staal, Dubinsky, MDZ and Anisimov, and hope that the prospects in the system, most notably Kreider, Werek, McIlrath and Thomas either begin or continue to take the necessary steps towards becoming NHL players themselves. I will be okay not making the playoffs if Stepan, McDonagh, Sauer and one of MZA or Grachev makes the roster and are able to establish themselves as NHL players.

Yeah, it would be some fun games to watch. Add more players to the young core to grow up together. Not to mention they are all 25 years of age and under (Staal, Dubinsky, Callahan, Anisimov, MDZ, McD, MZA, Sauer, and Stepan. Girardi, Boyle, and Prust are only 26 years old. Gaborik, Lundqvist and Frolov (If he has a very good year, I hope the Rangers retain him, I think he can be an excellent player with Gaborik) all 28 years old. 15 players 28 years old and younger.

Like you said, next year, add some other rookies like Grachev, Kreider, or McI, and that is the recipe for longer-term success for an NHL team. Every year adding good young players to the pot and have your core grow together.

I think Stepan and McDonagh are nearly locks. Sauer I believe has a strong chance and one of MZA and Grachev just because we are so thin on right wing.

So here's the thing.

If Stepan makes the team, he makes it over Christensen

If McDonagh makes the team, he makes it over Redden and Eminger who play his side.

If Sauer makes the team, he makes it over Gilroy who plays on his side.

I don't know which side Valentenko plays.

Of course depending on Rozsival's injury, we may have a better chance of seeing more rookies.

well here is the bottom line on the vet depth chart

Frolov, Dubinsky, Prospal, Avery, Boogaard
Anisimov, Christiensen, Drury, Boyle, White
Gaborik, Callahan, Prust, Kennedy............Fedotenko invite

So with that I can see White getting the boot due to $. Although I think he has some game left. After that does there not have to be a trade?

Stepan seems like their choice in the middle of Fro/Gabby.......that could change yes but I think he will earn a spot. So there is 1 rookie.

I don't see how Grachev or Zuccarello can be there right now unless they make a move. Next yr different story I expect them to on the team for sure or will be pissed.

On D I think Redden is a goner for sure and McDonaugh will make it, So that's two rookies

Depth on D is Staa, Girardi, Del Zotto, Rozsival as the top 4. After that I can see Eminger getting the boot, Semenov as the cheap 5th.

So I think Valatenko and Sauer have a chance to steal the 6th spot on D and if they falter Semenov comes in and out of the lineup

I was one of many who disparaged some of the team's offseason moves because I felt that if we weren't going to go after Kovy, then we should play the kids. And with the signing of EC, Vinny, Frolov, Kennedy plus the tryout invitees I thought we were building some real roadblocks to the kids. Therefore I was down on the offseason.

At this point I am cautiously optimistic that management will be true to its word and multiple kids may play their way onto the roster. If they are willing to trade/demote/sit one or more of EC, Avery, Prospal (that last one is unlikely) allowing an extra rookie forward and have at least one, if not two, rookie D plus Semenov as the 7th guy, I will change my tune on the offseason.

The intersting thing is, if the kids do make it, you gotta see trades coming. Too many of these bubble guys have value as legit NHLers.

Lets see if I can work this out.

Frolov - Center - Gabby
Dubi - Drury - Cally
Prospal - AA - Winger
Avery - Boyle - Prust

Boogaard

I only see 2 forward jobs available there...You gotta figure 1 goes to Christensen or Stepan, and the other goes to Grachev or MZA

on D you have 4 spots for sure given out in Staal, Girardi, MDZ, and Rozsival

So if we go with 2 rookies there, youve got Sauer and McDonagh, though more likely you have 1 of those 2, and 1 of Eminger, Exelby, Gilroy or Semenov

Can Grachev play the right side? If so he improves his chances on making the team.

No McDonagh?

I think McD and Stepan make it. Don't know if Grachev or MZA will but I'd like to see it happen.

So 2, possibly 3.

This is how i see it. For mine grachev is going back to the pack, stephan and MZA make the team and Kennedy fills in for Drury. The battle for d spots should be interesting

I gotta see McD play a couple of more pre-season games as well, before I'm sold.

Stepan, Mcdonough are the only locks in my opinion.

Sauer has a good shot over Gilroy and if Rosival is injured then Valentenko might get the nod.

MZA and Grachev are maybes... depending on how White, Prust/Avery, and Fedotenko do.

I was wondering if you forgot about him or if you had a reason for not putting him in there but your reasoning is fair.

I think Grachev has the edge over MZA on size and familiarity with NA hockey alone. Theres still plenty of time left for MZA to prove himself in the pre season but I think that hes better served spending some time in the A.
