This would be a real setback for the flyers. Leighton is just coming into his own. This hurts theor chances to get back to the cup. Th is becoming Leightons team, him not playing could have severe consequences.

Agreed. Last thing I want to see if a goaltending controversy starting -6 games into the season.

Truth be told, we've had a goalie controversy for roughly two decades.

That's not me disagreeing with you, that's just me picking at the scab that's been covering up the net in Philly for what seems like forever.

And I agree. But the "controversy" always starts midway through the REGULAR season, when a goalie gets tired/hurt/plays like ass. Not midway through the PRE season.

Me too, at least Leighton lets in shots from close range, Hexy let'em in from the blueline or, sometimes, outside.

bit early to be worrying me thinks..

i suspect he'll sit out a few games to heal up.. considering he played till the end of the 3rd period it couldnt be that bad...

@DNFlyers Frank Seravalli
I think Michael Leighton's injury is far more serious than the Flyers are leading on. That's just my opinion. I'm looking into specifics.

If Leighton's injury is serious where do the Flyers go? Will they be forced to make a move?

They'll ride Boucher. They only have two back-to-back games in October so that'll play into their thinking, too, depending on the severity of the injury to Leighton.

"We'll see how he is [today]," Holmgren said. "But we probably really won't know what's going on until we get back to Philadelphia and get him checked out."

While Holmgren is optimistic that Leighton will be fine by next week some time, he also revealed that this isn't the first time Leighton suffered the injury; he just re-aggravated it last night.

Leighton apparently strained his back this summer while exercising. It was unclear whether he suffered the injury before or after signing a 2-year, $3.1 million deal on June 30.

"He had some issues in the summer from working out that kind of flared up on him," Holmgren said. "But since training camp started, no, it hasn't been an issue. That's why we're hoping that it's a short-term thing."

Unfortunately for Leighton - and the Flyers - training camp is just a little more than a week old. It didn't take long for Leighton to have these problems. Leighton started Tuesday's preseason home opener against New Jersey but exited after two periods, as expected, for Russian prospect Sergei Bobrovsky.

Wasn't Emery injured at the start of last year and Boucher had to step in?

I think it was a few games in. Emery started the season (I remember him leading the league in all the stats categories or something lol).

If Leighton is out for a long time, I have a feeling we will look at another goalie.

Back injuries are always good, though. They heal up quick and you never hear about 'em again.

Right?

Note: it would be absolutely spectacular if it came out that he injured it prior to signing the contract, too.

I'm just assuming that's already going to happen. It would be too perfect.

Edit: Maybe it would also explain the suckfest in the finals. Not that I'm trying to justify it, I'm one who feels he was bound to get torn apart against a real offense anyway. But it would make everything a little more interesting.
