This was a decision that had to be made by Sather to clear the cap room and actually get under the salary cap. I still believe Redden is one of the top 6 NHL defenseman on this roster but his HUGE cap hit did not justify Redden on this team.
I hope Redden all the best.. He had a heck of an NHL career with a few All Star appearances. He was a true professional. It is a shame it had to be done this way but this is a business.
and all of a sudden.... The Rangers are under the cap thanks to the deep pockets of MSG and the Dolans. Sather is very lucky this move could have been made by management.
It was raised in some other thread- he has a kid on the way and, although he'd be passing on 6 million dollars for the new few years, if he's been frugal with his money he could possibly still do it.
Not a chance. Seriously, $6 million a year to play in the AHL? Why give that up? How many fathers do you know who really want to be home every day with a tiny baby? Plus, he still would be home for 1/2 the year.

Maybe he still is, however even if he had a decent contract it would probably be a decision between him and Gilroy who would be waved. It looks like at least one prospect is ready and should play in the NHL. That is best for the organization and thus room has to be made. Considering our lack of offensive d-men (only MDZ really) Gilroy's chances wouldn't be that bad even then I'd say.
So it's really not only because of his cap hit that he gets sent down, but also because he really is a borderline NHL defenseman at this point in his career.

Maybe so he can play in the NHL instead. There is some incentive to retire and come back and play for a new team with a realistic contract.
But, Like you said, 6M/YR to play in the AHL... It's hard not to. Plus, he get's to be on the of the best defense-man night in and night out down there. Maybe playing against scrubs helps him fine tune his game and he get's someone interested (I'm 99% sure nothing happens though)
This is a very good day for the team and the fans, but to be completely honest I feel so sorry for him and anyone in his situation. It was not his fault that Sather gave him this crazy deal. Wish you all the best Wade and good luck.
I mean I can't say I'm that surprised, but I am happy about this.
Sucks for Redden, and I'm sure he is not a bad guy and all, but I don't know how people can say they feel sorry for him. Give me a break guys. He just made more money in 5 years than many people will make combined in their entire life. I feel more sorry for the middle class people who just lost their jobs, not a pro athlete who has made great money in his career.
Now that is official he will never wear a Rangers uniform again, it would be an added bonus that he goes to another NHL team, retires, or goes to Europe and does not play in Hartford.
Honestly, I won't be surprised if he just refuses to report. Someone will pay him 2.5M to play in the NHL. Maybe in a city he and his wife like. They're not going to go to Europe with a new baby and I doubt Wade wants to ride a bus and play in the AHL for half a decade. He could get a new contract, maybe even a tryout deal before the season starts, for a year or two and if he plays decent hockey get another deal for maybe 3M/3 years at which point he'll have earned ~14M and only lost out on 9M for not reporting to Hartford.
Why do people keep saying they wouldn't go to Europe with a new baby? Why not? It's not like Switzerland or Sweden are Bolivia or something. They are actually quite wonderful places to live.
No one is going to take him off waivers with that contract, but for the sake of my own knowledge, if a team DID pick him up on waivers, could it still be one of the teams he lists as a NO in his NTC list?
I'm as happy and giddy as the next guy, but at the same time I kinda feel for the dude. Sure the poor play is all on him, but nobody would turn down an offer like he was given. That's on Sather.

Because Wade and his wife, when they got married, when they discussed having children, and when they decided to have a kid probably had no intention of living in/raising their child in Europe? They probably have planned on living in North America where the kid will be near family, etc. I just don't think they're going to want to go to Europe having just had a child.
