Can anyone confirm a River Rats Rumor?

There's a rumor circulating among some River Rats season ticket holders that the Rats may be moved to NJ. The rumor goes on to say that if the Rats leave Albany, the Portland Pirates will be moving to Albany to replace them. No one I spoke to who heard the rumor can name any credible sources. A River Rats rep who called me to try to get me to attend the last home game of the season said he heard similar rumors but told me not to believe anything I hear until...(he never actually finished that sentence to say until what). He did say the River Rats will definitely be back next season - They're pushing season ticket sales for next season right now.

The Portland Pirates just signed a long lease in Portland.

I'm sure one of the Washington folks can fill in all the details, but that team isn't moving.

210 is correct all Portland is waiting for is who the affiliate is but the only place Portland was going was Worcester and that was immediately shot to pieces by the wife of our CEO Brian Petrovek.... something to the effect of I hope you choke every day on your drive to Worcester cause I'm not going.

The rumor of Albany moving to Trenton has been circulating ever since the Trenton Titans came into existance.

As for Portland, everything that I have heard and read leads to Anaheim leaving Cincy and moving to Portland.

Also, it sounds like the AHL may be very busy in the off-season with a number of teams moving their affiliates.

Any word on who would pick up Cincy? If they don't shut down that is.

I have a friend that works for the Florida Everblades (ECHL) that has close ties with some big wig in the River Rats front office, my friend told me that 05-06 will be the last year for the River Rats in Albany, and that the team was very shocked the Devils renewed for next season, it was widely believed this year would be the last year.

I can't imagine another team would move into Albany, the attendance and fan support is terrible. The only way I can see another team coming to Albany after the Rats leave is one a new smaller arena and it being a UHL/ECHL team.

Here's the question though, is attendance/fan support terrible because the Rats have been cellar dwellars for the last few seasons? It's tough to get excited about a team that has had a losing record for the past 6 seasons.

Certainly moving to another arena isn't an option with the Pepsi Arena downtown.

Again, ever since the arena in Trenton was built, rumors have been going around that eventually the Devils would move their AHL affiliate there. With the trend of NHL teams moving their affiliates closer to home (with the exception of Anaheim and Colorad), it would make sense. The Titans have a very good fan base and would probably welcome AHL hockey. Not to mention the instant rivalry they would have with the Phantoms that would mirror the Devils/Flyers rivalry.

The attendance isn't bad because the team is bad. The only year attendance was decent was the year after they won the cup and usually only when they played Adirondack, and a few other special occassions. Albany is a college hockey market, it always has been and always will be. The city draws great for all the NCAA hockey events there, but you can't give tickets away to a pro team in Albany.

But you just said that they had decent attendance the year after they won the cup. Maybe the reason was based on expectations that the team was going to be good.

The River Rats have been horrible for the past 6 seasons. I'm not discounting that Albany is an NCAA hockey town, but it's tough to draw when you aren't even close to .500 for 6 consecutive seasons.

Here is their attendance stats along with their winning percentage for the past 8 years starting with 97-98

4584 .606
4590 .613
4503 .419
3515 .412
3857 .250
3726 .381
3454 .331
3703 .400

I don't think it is a coincidence that attendance has dropped as the team got worse and worse.

If you put a winning franchise in Albany, I believe that they could draw between 4500 and 5000

I don't doubt that a team in Albany that was even half way decent would draw 4500-5000 people, but the fact of the matter is they are playing in a 14,000 seat arena, and 4500-5000 people isn't enough of a draw for an arena that size for the team to be making any money. 5000 people won't even fill the lower bowl, and in the Devils upper managements minds that isn't good enough to keep the team there.

Guess we better kick out Hamilton, Milwaukee, Houston, Cleveland and Hartford then.

If the team can draw 4500+ per night in a building that is basically paid for, they can make money.

Do the Devils have ownership in the River Rats? If they don't, then how much revenue the Rats make is irrelevant.
