They shouldn't be IMO. Nice to know the people you talk to, for the good reasons of course.

Agreed. Don't post all too often but I read all the time, would be interesting to know more about people.

It's not like saying what language you speak is a very sensitive issue. At least not IMO.

Then the tiebreaker is the language you speak.

You should have included English and French, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one who speak both at home.

Edit: I chose English though.

It's the same with me, except Portuguese.

My parents use to speak to in Portuguese growing up, until a certain age where only my dad would, then my dad just started speaking English.. and yeah I lost alot of my Portuguese

I don't speak it well or much, but understand it well enough.

I'm not. That's how thread came up, well, my version of it anyway. Ginu was asking someone to post a poll on another habs forum in french, to see a dif side of the story, I said the majority here are french anyway so it was pointless.

I used to be perfectly fluent in Italian. I still speak it everyday to communicate with my grandparents, but it has turned into dialect now.

I'm pretty brutal. For example, a few years ago, my grandfather was over for thanksgiving and I asked my bro how to say "Happy thanksgiving". He tells me, I go to my grandfather and say "Buona festa del tacchino". My grandfather starts laughing, I'm like what? Then my bro is like "i made you say happy turkey day". I'm not great and my comprehension isn't 100% either so got made a fool of there lol.

MY GF spent a year in Italy and most Italians she meets in Montreal are amazed by how well she speaks it, it seems that a lot of Italians have turned to this kind of dialect you are talking about.

Who cares what people speak at home. The interesting question is: What languages can you speak?

IE English, French or Both.

Now if they answer the poll, they can probably speak English, but still... a little statistical bias never hurt anyone!

It's not that they turned to the dialect, it just depends what part of Italy they come from. Each region has their own dialect and many times, it's hard to understand other region's dialects. My family speaks the Treviso dialect, which I understand perfectly (obviously), but if you ask me to translate the Sicilian dialect, I would fail miserably.
