Defensive pairings

Hey guys, hello from a LA fan.

I was just curious if you guys have a good idea of what your initial defensive pairing will look like?

Thanks

Only the top 4 (with no regard to who's playing what side):

Staal-Rozsival
Del Zotto-Girardi

After that, McDonagh and Gilroy seem to have the edge for the last pairing over Eminger, Sauer, and Valentenko

I think he's been injured a fair amount...not even sure if he's played a preseason game yet, but I missed the second one.

He played one game, with Del Zotto on Saturday night. Both had a pretty rough outing, especially early on. I really don't think Eminger has the skill set for what a #7 guy should bring.

I don't know yet, but I really hope Valentenko makes the club. The Rangers brought XLB to camp simply because he had a physical presence on defense. We've groaned for years about how much the PP need a better point shot..Rozsival didn't shoot enough, maybe NYR should trade for Souray or Jovo to drive home goals...Shanny was tried back there as well as many others. This kid hits and has a cannon, two things NYR defense has been starved for, for a long time. Although he struggled to move Holmstrom out from the crease, most do, he's good at parking himself there, NYR haven't had a crease clearing D-man since Beukeboom and now we might have one. We haven't had a D-man with a cannon (who likes to use it) since Zubov and now we might have one. He's 22 so his defense isn't perfect, but he's not terrible either. He's played in the AHL and a little bit in the KHL, so far in camp, I've liked what I've seen in the exhibition games. I don't know how well his English is, if it's any decent, I think he's got a really good shot at making the club and I only say that, because It's easier for the coaching staff to communicate if his defense needs some work.

he was nothing special the first game but with that he's a vet and I think he will be the 7th Dman . I see why some people say Sauer since he has to clear waivers but I really doubt he gets claimed even if he did. Especially if they wait right till the end of camp and teams are already set

Top 6 of Staal, Girardi, Del Zotto, Rozsival, McDonaugh, Gilroy

Sauer and Valatenko will get a shot but in the end I see them going down

Bright side is as the others get experience they can eventually eliminate Rozsival from the books and one of the kids jumps in

Staal and Girardi will be one of the best shut down pairings in the league. the problem is if a team has 2 good lines they have to split them up and put Girardi with MDZ. which they did all the time last year. I hope they don't have to do that as much this year. I am impressed with Gilroy. He just needs to think defence first becasue he is great offensively. just have to have the right defensive partner.

Depends on the battles in camp. Right now we have

Valentenko vs McDonagh

Sauer vs Eminger vs Gilroy

Boyle vs Kennedy

Avery vs Fedotenko

Stepan vs Christensen

Boogaard vs more room for the backup goalie to stretch out on the bench.

I'd say the one the furthest to the right is winning each battle.

No they won't.

Unless of course you completely ignore Girardi there and pretend there are 2 Marc Staals.

I think Mcdonagh and Gilroy will be our third pairing but I would rather see Valentenko in for Gilroy. Valentenko has a good hard shot and can be nasty when necessary which is what the rangers could use out of their 6th d-man and haven't had in years.

By the way i am a new poster and have always liked reading everyone's opinions over the years on HF and have come to realize that there is no better hockey fan than a ranger fan!

MDZ upside? What do you expect?

After an awesome rookie season, what do you expect out of Del Zotto this season? What sort of player(s) do you compare him to (eventually)?

Seems like this kid has a ton of offensive prowess and will be a needed addition to the Rangers' PP, but can he hold his own in the defensive end right now?

Horrid misspellings aside, I think this is the most likely, albeit not the most desirable scenario.

yeah well Girardi wasn't very good with Staal for long stretches of last year either, what do you want?

Rozsival is the one other guy who has proven he can play huge minutes like Staal, which is why I put them together

It also doesn't really matter because the coaches will switch things around until they find somethign that works
