Exclusive: Spectrum demolition set for November

Incredible memories, they'll last forever.

http://delcotimes.com/articles/2010/...3954015791.txt

Quote:
After sitting dormant for an entire year, the Spectrum is now walking the Green Mile en route to its day of reckoning … or rather … wreckoning.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Times Comcast-Spectacor President and Chief Operating Officer Peter Luukko announced that the demolition of the Spectrum will begin in a little more than a month.

“The paperwork should be finished this week,” Luukko said. “We will begin the demolition during the first week of November.”

Luukko added that the process will take a little more time than it took for Veterans Stadium to become a pile of rubble and a memory.

The Vet took 62 seconds, the Spectrum will take a little more than a month.

“You can’t just implode it like you did the Vet because of the way it’s built,” Luukko said.

“The Vet had all those columns, so all you had to do for that was strap some dynamite to each column and watch it collapse on itself.

“The Spectrum would have to be blown up in pieces, and that doesn’t make any sense, so we’re going to just take a wrecking ball to it.”

In three weeks they'll announce another Sixers games, concert series, and charity event resulting in the demolition being pushed back until 2024.

That is after the roof blows off the Wells Fargo Center. So, the Sixers and Flyers have to play the remanding games at the Spectrum.

While the comments may have been said tongue and cheek, at this point in time the Spectrum is not a usable facility and hasn't been for many months.

In any event, I'm glad I have my 2 seats, but I'm really bummed that the boards "disappeared" before I could purchase a section.

While we knew it was coming, the thought of the old girl being taken down is sad.

Hopefully the FU/Wachovia/WFC/whatever/ can build some comparable memories of its own.

I would have bought two seats but they are absurdly overpriced and it's not like they've been selling overly fast. They are still trying to dump them off.

What's the price up to now? I would love to have a set. A neighbor of mine has a pair of Vet seats.

Outside of the collateral damage, I agree 100%.

I guess an implosion would be kinda cool too.

I got an email about a week ago the offer is 2 seats and 2 lower level tickets to select games for $200. Damn good deal. Your pretty much getting the seats for free with lowers to a crappy weeknight game.

Seriously? That is pretty good. They were 395 a pair.

Edit: The website still lists the full price. Any more details about your email? Are you a STH getting a special offer?

What a bummer. I still don't like this idea. Does anyone know the state of the Phantoms? I remember there was talk of building a new arena for them around Philly when this deal first went down. Are they just staying in ADK?

They will probably stay for awhile.

I'm surprised they didn't talk to West Chester. My town somehow has 40M to spend on a municipal stadium that will only be able to attract a short season A team.

You'd think a hockey/performing arts center with a great AHL affiliate would be a bigger catch.

Financing, among other issues, for the new Allentown facility hit a snag which delayed the anticiapted opening by a year. Last I knew, the stay at the current facility was increased by at least one year with the eventual hope of relocating to Allentown for the 2013 season (IIRC) or maybe beyond depending on awaited construction.

Here's the link:
http://ev15.evenue.net/cgi-bin/ncomm...ller=&appCode=

I just did it to see if it was legit with no catches and if anything was left. I picked the Oct 14th game against TB which is Gagne's welcome home game and got section 118 row 26 plus 2 seats. It came out to $222.60 after taxes and fees get you from behind.

I didn't get it because I'm already going to that game but it def does work. Let me know if that works for you or not, if not I'll PM you or forward the email.

Sweet. The link works. As soon as I get paid I'll be purchasing tickets. Awesome man, that saved my 400 bucks.

Awesome. Especially cool since the Gagne return game is one of them. I wish I would have got that email before I blew $140 on 2nd level seats. Could have dropped another $80 and got lowers and taken home some seats. I'm gonna have to see if I can make any of those other games.

I'll be going to the Gagne game in all likelihood.
