'10-11 Sabres injuries (Post-season)

Obviously need one of those. Rivet left Friday's practice with a throat contusion, per TBN, and saw a specialist who told him to sit for a few days before resuming exercise.

He's in worse shape than initially thought, IMO. MY GUESS: he's not ready for opening night. These little setbacks are bad for a guy who needs to be hit in order to see if he's physically ready to resume..

Ruff said Craig Rivet (throat contusion) is improving and is back at the arena working out on an exercise bike. Ruff said Rivet's throat remains sore but is hoping the captain can be back on the ice in a day or two.

I'm trying to grasp why you would take the leap in logic from Rivet having a bruised throat (contusion) to the conclusion that he is in worse shape than we thought.

Worse shape than we thought in terms of being ready. No ice time in the offseason = less ready. Hardly bold logic. "Grasped" yet?

My point was, I don't see what one (throat contusion) has to do with the other (being less ready or in worse shape). I take his throat contusion to mean.... he has a throat contusion and nothing more. No idea why you're reading more into this.

A throat contusion isn't caused by not being in shape. Nor is taking a few days off right now going to stop him from being ready.

Keep Rivet out the first 20 - 30 games and let Butler/Weber/Sekera fight it out to see whos "really" ready to play in the bigs. Insert Craigsy and trade whom ever couldn't cut it for a conditional draft pick in 2012.

DUNDAS, Ont. -- The Sabres will play their third exhibition game tonight, and it will be the third time Patrick Kaleta has not dressed. Among the Sabres' veterans, only Kaleta and captain Craig Rivet (neck contusion) haven't played.

Coach Lindy Ruff, after a second question today about Kaleta's status, said the right winger is not cleared to play.

"Um, he wasnít cleared to play tonight," Ruff said in JL Grightmire Arena. "Heíll be cleared to play Thursday. Um, itís a little bit of, uh, neck stiffness, so heís just been held out."

The first time Ruff was asked about Kaleta not playing, he answered: "Kaleta's not, I ... I just said I think you want to give the fans the opportunity to see your best players."

I'm not sure which worries me more - Ruff's transcribed hesitation in giving details or TBN's emphasis of such.

It's been said here before...Kaleta's style of play warrants absolutely no unnecessary playing time. The guy's never played over 60 games (I think). Why risk injury?

Disconcerting that it's his neck again. Say it's precautionary all you want, but it's still a recurring issue, and that is very troublesome. Many want Kaleta to be given a larger role, but that can't happen until he shows he can stay in the lineup.

Exactly. You already know what you are getting with Kaleta. No need to risk him getting hurt be delivering a hit/getting jumped in an exhibition game.

I agree with the above.

Kaleta is fine. They're just making something out of nothing so they can hold him out of preseason action as much as possible.

Very true and a valid point but, at the same time, we constantly hear players talk how they can't get their timing and overall conditioning needed for real game action through practices and scrimmages. Kaleta has said in the past whenever he was sidelined that he needed the flow of game action to get back into a rhythm and feel confident.

Eh, he's going to be playing 4th line minutes, at least to start the year. He doesn't need to play that big a role, so we can give him some time to get in the swing of things.

Sabres 2010-11

Seemed like an oddly hesitant response to the question considering he says he will be cleared to play Thursday. Kaleta certainly has had neck issues in the past and they will dog him the rest of his career. Its frustrating to see its flaring up already.

Part of me wants to dread the worst and think this is some kind of post-concussion syndrome or migrane problem or some type of recurring head injury, not neck.

The "neck" is just a convenient excuse.

Its the neck. He has had issues with discs in his neck since juniors. They press on the nerves and create concussion like symptoms

That's really ridiculous. He's a professional hockey player. While hockey players will forever be known to be able to knock down a few brews, to suggest that Kaleta is missing time because he was too drunk is just dumb. I'm sorry, but it is.

Well, we'll see if he's in the lineup tomorrow against Montreal.
