Could be open spot for Henry

I didn't see this posted anywhere and it's from this morning's Gazette, the article goes on to say with Hamr and Markov injured, Martin sent Carle down in favour of keeping the more physical Henry in case he's needed when the season starts. All this was obvious but it's still interesting to see it confirmed.

So how would Henry look on the Habs current roster? Obviously I've seen him a little but I'm curious as to what others think. Is there a chance he could steal a spot all year? The D looks pretty set. Thanks.

I liked him with Subban, PK was free to wheel all over the ice and Henry was back to cover him. I personally would rather have him in the lineup opening night vs. the Leafs than Weber as they'll probably be running our small guys all night.

Well, I'd be a bit leery. I like Henry fine, for what he does, just not sure that we'd be the right team for him at the moment. When he doesn't have to move much, he's fine, and he's a tough customer in front of the net. But we've also got Subban as a gambler, we've got Spacek looking like a turnstile, and Gill is kind of like Henry in that when he's facing the right way in the right situations he's fine, but guys can blow by him. O'Byrne is mobile in theory, but I don't see it translating a lot in the games. We'd have some challenges on the back end with Henry added to the group. Maybe challenges are inevitable with Markov and Hamrlik out. But I wouldn't automatically discount Weber or Picard from the running in comparison with Henry. It's probably worth watching the waiver wire a bit though too. There may be temporary options available. But Hamrlik isn't out long is he?

Also, the idea of keeping Henry around through camp may be more just for the higher level of rambunctiousness you see in pre-season games vs. regular season games.

We'll see how exposed he gets when playing ALL NHL guys at NHL regular season pace.

I would not be mad to have some larger bodies on D, but they have to be able to play at this level

Sigh, am the only one who thinks Alex Henry is similar to Jay Leach? For the record I thought Jay Leach played alright for us when he did...all things considered...

Wouldn't be a bad idea having him in the lineup against Toronto cause it might be a long night

I wouldn't mind him as our #7 D to be honest (albeit Martin will most likely pair him with Gill so it may be painful at times) but I'd rather he continued doing his great job with the Dogs.

He will be a good option when we play against more physical teams (Toronto, Philly). He does not back up against anyone and his toughness will be a good fit in a defense that doesn't have enough (in my opinion).

So if the injuries stay true for opening night and Martin keeps Henry, we are looking at

Spacek/Subban
Gill/Gorges
Henry/O'Byrne

?

Weber would be the other option but against Toronto I'm sure he would prefer Henry since the Leafs are a physical team

They said on RDS yesterday Hamrlik might play saturday night against the Islanders, so I guess that means he'll probably be ready by October 7th...

Martin might have the idea of putting Hamrlik in the line up even if he will play one or no pre-season games....

I'd rather have Henry too + Picard as #7 d-man.

Interesting, I'm still holding out hope for O'Byrne and with everyone healthy he'd be #7. Not that this team is crazy deep but the depth sure has improved in a short period of time. Oh well, we will see very soon how this all materializes.

Hamrlik will be back and it'll be between O'Byrne and Henry as to who he plays with.

I don't think there is any chance that he stays with us when everyone is healthy...but if Markov and Hamrlik are not ready to go at the start of the season then i suppose its possible we keep him around for a few more weeks.

Open the spot for the Toronto game....close it for the Pens one.

I don't even think he's as close to NHL ready but honestly I think he does have potential to maybe crack a line up somewhere and eventually retain it.

Could just be he needs more time in the NHL to adapt.

He's an alright 6th guy. He knows his role well. I'd like to see him get back in the NHL.

Though, not at the expense of an even slower d. He's a good partner for a Subban type player, who stays back whil Subs does his thing.

His only use against Phillie would be to fight Shelly, they are to fast for him to play defense against, they made our guys look bad in last year's playoffs with speed.

What do you guys think of moving O'Byrne? What would be his value out there.A pick or young player back.I wouldn't really mind moving O'Byrne for a pick 3rd or 4th rounder to make room for a guy like Henry who will pretty much give us the same play on ice

Would you guys move him?

If we can play MAB against Washington and Pittsburgh in the playoffs, I'm certain we can make due with a more physical Henry. Martin is a defensive coach I'm sure he can figure it out. We need punishers on the back end. Getting a simple system to help Henry is the way to go. I'd go as far as saying let's considering keeping Nash up here too. Philly's defensemen are big and slow, yet they made it to the Finals. It's all about the system.

He's kinda slow and dumb. O'Byrne is a clear and massive upgrade.

If possible.

There will be a lot of waiver guys once the final cuts are made. Maybe not great timing market-wise.

O'B needed to show more of a sense of urgency. He's fighting for his job and getting passed like a Lada on the TransCanada, depth-chart-wise.

It's a shame because he has good physical skills/package...
