Theres Phoenix 7th veteran dman. I'd take sob in a second here in Phoenix.

Brings some grit and some energy to the backend.

He doesn't bring a lot of offense... But he brings a good defensive and is an energy guy.

The only downside... Is he has a "party" attitude... He really really likes to party at clubs which might be a bad influence on rookies... We only got rid of him since Alberts outplayed him and we have a bad cap situation and we can't keep O'Brien as a 7th guy
That was his only fight last year, pretty sad for a guy who had 14 in 06/07. Defensive dmen should be nasty and play with an edge, Obrien doesnt anymore.

Man this is a perfect opportunity for the Habs to get a mobile tough guy on the backend. We say we lack a fighter as well. Moen is an exception. Right now Martin isn't too happy with O'Byrne's performance in the offseason. Maybe even a possible swap as Vancouver is trying to shed salary.

With Markov out until reported end of October, Hamrlik is probably ready come Thursday most think.

I think either send O'byrne down or make an O'Byrne for O'Brien swap maybe.

O'Brien is a PK player and is decent player for what the Habs are looking for. He was a plus 15 last year.

Hamrlik Subban
Gorges Gill
O'Brien Spacek

Would be pretty solid even when Markov comes back. The Habs if a chance should take him. He is ready to play which is a plus, he is in the final year of his contract so it could be a good chance if he pans out we could re-sign him to a decent deal as well.

Yea - not surprised to see SOB go... I really like Alberts in this role, someone that could replace Willie Mitchell's defensive zone toughness... A 6-5, 218 lb rearguard that can hit and seems to have decent positioning (will get help from the other blueliners on staff now).

I like it.

Surprising to see Obie getting waived. Frankly amazed how Alberts outplayed him at camp and in the preseason. I have to admit, I was firmly in the O'Brien > Alberts camp. Sad to see him sink to waiver wire level. He was improving there for a while.

about time. Good riddance to both.

Terry Murray spoke the truth when he called O'brien a clown.

SOB will be claimed. He's still an NHL-calibre defenceman despite our logjam on defence. Now, Hordichuk on the other hand...

The thing is, SOB won't play as a 7th ... it's beneath him.

While he does have top four upside, he thinks he plays that way all the time, and therefore would complain and make a big fuss if he wasn't at least playing full time.

He actually is a decent player, and for a team that has room in their roster, he'll have a positive impact. He didn't work hard enough in this preseason to put himself above Alberts or Bieksa.

To think Jay Feaster once traded a first rounder for SOB.

I think Vancouver would have to take a similarly undesirable contract back in return to trade O'Brien, and it would probably be easier to just eat his $1.6 million in the minors this year than to have to take on multiple one-way contracts or take on a similar deal. I don't think either O'Brien or Hordichuk will get claimed.

To be fair didn't that pick turn into Logan MacMillan who is not looking like he has much of a pro hockey future?

Alberts is playing way more solid, especially this preseason, hustling, looking more confident and his positioning is more sound.

So while AA is playing SOB's role on a much cheaper contract, SOB is simply a cap casualty.

I hope he sticks with us as he is a decent depth youngerish dman, who is sometimes tough, could be useful when the playoffs start, if he survives the waivers to the farm.

I'm really wondering if Hordichuk will be claimed. He's awful, but for what its worth he can at least stand in with a heavyweight like Parros and not get creamed.

I have a feeling Burke will take a run at SOB, even with our glut of defensemen.

O'Brien actually had 2 scraps last year. He fought Chipchura as well as Simmonds.

He had 9,6, & 14 fights in the three previous years, so obviously he tailed off big time with the fisticuffs last year.

I liked SOB personally, but his lackluster pre-season did him in.

He would definitely make a decent bottom pairing d-man for a team that needs some back end help though. The Canucks just had too much talent on the back end for him to make sense at a 1.6M cap hit.
