Penner and Hemsky at the deadline.

If the oilers have another rough year andthere is a very realistic chance that they will Two players they should get A LOT of calls on are Penner and Hemsky teams like boston, ottawa, LA and others could be looking to aquire that one last big offensive peice to put them over the top.

There may even be a suprise team or 2 that no one expects to do well thatmight be looking for an upgrade to help themmake the final playoff push.

Hemsky and penner could bring back some real nice peices for the future of that there is no question.

with that inmind what do you think hemsky and penner would fetch at the deadline?

I see absolutely no reason for them to trade Hemsky. He is still young and Eberle has a long, long, way to go before he takes that spot in the line-up. The Oilers do need some more depth in their prospect pool, but trading Hemsky is not the way to do it.

As far as Penner goes, if they moved him what would the average height of their forward corps be? 6'0. Best to keep their only power forward for now.

IMO it depends on how our rookies perform.

Pääjärvi could replace Penner and Omark could replace Hemsky.

Not that I necessarily wanted to trade any of Penner/Hemsky, but assuming all our rookies perform like that, we would have a future top9 with:

Penner - Gagner - Hemsky
Hall - X - Eberle
Pääjärvi - Horcoff - Omark

which would be too expensive to keep over long term.

So we sooner or later would have to deal some of them.

So depending on what we would get offered and on how our rookies perform up to then, it could be the ideal part to at least trade one of them then.

If Paajarvi and Hall are playing very good (1st-2nd line stats) Penner is expandable for probably a young #2 center/defenseman or a package of picks and prospects.

Hemsky, well I don't really want him traded. 2 first rounders at least.

It's a little early for this type of speculation, but in my opinion, it would be something like this:
Penner- 1st round pick, or 2nd round pick and a good prospect
Hemsky - multiple 1st round picks, or a legitimate number one d-man.

no team is dealing a legit #1 dman for Hemsky.

I agree. But I don't see a need to trade Hemsky unless it fills a need, and that, in my eyes is the need that is most difficult to fix. Hemsky and something for a top end d-man is what I would be after.

EDM's prospect pool would become ridiculous if they dealt both Hemsky and Penner for picks/prospects at the deadline. I think they would run into a serious logjam in salaries in about 4 or 5 years though. Probably best to stagger their talent a little.

Both players still have another year left on their deals after this season, so there should be no rush to trade them. It would take a big offer to pry either out of Edmonton IMO.

Both players are still in their mid 20's and should be corner stones of the rebuilding process. Every team needs skilled vetern players to take the pressure of the kids and provide leadership. We are building through the draft and have lots of cap space. When the kids are ready to take a shot at the cup there will be FA's that will sign and fill the holes.

Ottawa could use both. To Edmonton fans how's a 1st round pick plus Chris Campoli and Nick Folingo.

I think it's unlikely they will be traded this season, next season it is a much stronger possibility... I think the earlier you would see either moved is at the draft

I really hope that's a proposal for just one of them, but that being said, that doesn't look like a return EDM would be looking for.

Jesus Christ:

1. EDM will not deal it's top two forwards, 2 of its only 3 forward veterans four months from now.

2. Our kids need sheltering and mentoring for at least another 2 years.

A team like the Oilers maybe? I don't have that high of expectations, but is not out of the question that a healthy Oilers team that has a couple of things go right for them could be like the Avs last year. Either way, I doubt the Oil are looking to shop either Penner or Hemsky and won't even give it a thought unless they request a deal or have stalls in contract extensions.
