Backlund, Laliberte among seven sent to the Phantoms (Oct. 4)

Thats right.

Quote:
Veteran winger Bill Guerin was released today by the Flyers, general manager Paul Holmgren announced during a conference call with the media.

Guerin was trying to make the club as a free agent.

The Flyers sent Johan Backlund, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Erik Gustafsson, Jon Kalinski, Mike Testwuide, David Laliberte and Ben Holmstrom to Phantoms.

http://blogs.courierpostonline.com/f...ll-oct-4-2010/

Quote:
Q: What is the latest update you can give us?

“Today we loaned Johan Backlund, Marc-Andre Bourdon, Erik Gustafsson, Jon Kalinski, Mike Testwuide, David Laliberte and Ben Holmstrom to the [Adirondack] Phantoms of the American Hockey League and we released, from a professional tryout, Bill Guerin.”
http://www.csnphilly.com/10/04/10/Fl...166&feedID=695

Quote:
“I think a combination of [things], we do have some young kids we liked during the course of training camp and in the preseason games,” Holmgren said. “Some of those guys were loaned down today. It’s just one of those things. We need to move forward.”

On Sunday in Buffalo, Holmgren speculated he might waive Johan Backlund back to the Phantoms and was confident he would clear waivers. The club did just that, also loaning Marc-Andre Bourdon, Erik Gustafsson, Jon Kalinski, and David Laliberte to the Phantoms, as well. Laliberte, like Backlund, has to clear waivers.

Neither Leighton (bulging disk/back) nor Laperriere (post-concussion syndrome) have been placed on long-term injury (LTIR) but it is expected Laperriere will start the season on it. Updates on both are expected by then. Holmgren said a decision on Leighton was an “internal question” yet unanswered.

I think he could use some time down in the minors, heal up and make another comeback.

I hope he doesn't get picked up.

I hope he isn't claimed. Didn't the Oilers just waive a goalie whose name started with a G, who had played in the NHL in the past? If he wasn't picked up, perhaps there is hope Backlund won't be either.

Edit: I think the goalie I was thinking of is named Gerber?

Do we really need Backlund taking valuable AHL starts? He is 27 already, he isn't even a prospect anymore.

Let Bob start in the AHL. I'd rather our AHL starter be a PROSPECT. Not some career AHL'er. Pick up Ersberg on waivers to fill in for Leighton while he is out.

Frolik?

I think you mean Grabner, who was traded to Florida in the Ballard swap from Vancouver.

And like I said elsewhere, I want to Flyers to pick up Grabner.

Actually he's 29, so you're more correct than you think.

Why doesn't Backlund have a two way contract?

edit: Actually he is. He is waiver eligible because of his age.

That is the RW prospect from Vancouver, I thought he was a pretty good prospect in Vancouver? Guess Fla did not agree?

Hmm? Bob is already pretty much guaranteed to be on the NHL team. Right now Riopel and Stewart arent looking to good in the AHL. I'd rather have Backlund down there starting then those two. Having a good goalie can actually make the rest of your team play better. He was also the best player on the squad last season. I think Backlund just needs a few months to get back into shape. He didnt play for 6+ months and they expected him to come in and destroy. Not gonna happen. I still thinks he has what it takes to be a backup.

Haha, That's even funnier. He is wasted roster space! Career AHL'er!

He'd fill out our top 9 pretty nicely, especially since the Carcillo-Betts/Powe-Shelley line is pretty set for our 4th.

JVR-Richards-Carter
Hartnell-Briere-Leino
Grabner-Giroux-Zherdev
Carcillo-Betts/Powe-Shelley

I like.

He has offensive skills, but is lacking on D. It's a total surprise move that Florida is waiving him.

Worth a shot. Good skater with good hands that can contribute on our 3rd line. I'd prefer more defense on the 3rd line myself, but Grabner > Nodl or Laliberte

If I were GM.

Backlund -> Who cares
Grabner -> put in a waiver claim
Ersberg -> put in a waiver claim, let him play with Boucher in the NHL
Bob -> AHL starter for at least half a season, no reason to rush him

Let Ericsson, Riopel and Morrison continue their development.

29 year old goalie in the AHL is a joke. He is a wasted contract and wasted roster spot.

I think Homer showed that he isnt going to go out and get another goalie. Homer is big on the "if you prove yourself, your in" type of thing (for the most part.) Stats wise, Bob was top 5 in the categories. I think at this point Homer thought that it would be a huge moral blow after Bob worked his ass off, looked very very good during preseason, just to be sent back to the AHL. Now, I dont think it will be a good idea to let Bob sit on the bench, but I guess Homer saw this one as the lesser of 2 evils.

Also if we were going to go out and get another goalie, I think he would have already instead of playing Bob almost every game. Theo might have been here already also. I think that he has been pretty much set with Bob as the backup. I, personally, dont think Boosh is gonna be able to hold it for more then a few games, so we will get to see Bob sooner then later.

I tend to agree, except for the FACT that Bob will pull a Hextall+, win the Calder, Vezina, Conn Smythe and lift the cup!!!

Most teams have their rosters set to start the season. It's a good time to get guys through waivers.

thats a good point. Wouldnt mind taking a crack at him. Could use a scoring threat on the 3rd line.

I like Backlund, but man, he might be a problem for us this year, especially what he did last night. Curious, how cheap would we get Grabner because he was waived?

Oh man, c'mon I did like Laliberte, but I guess this might give him another shot on another NHL team. Good luck man!
