I don't know much about him, but he scored 30+ goals in 61 games one year. I guess injuries were a major concern.
Most teams rosters were full and had no need for an experiment and/or depth grinder.

Doesn't matter what he's put up that long ago. Cheechoo once put up 50 goals and Guerin once put up 34 goals. That doesn't make them good players today and certainly hasn't helped them get spots on anyone's roster.

In Svatos' case, he hasn't been the same since suffering some injuries back around that one season. Probably doesn't help that he's never had a full season in his career (hell, he's never played more then 66 games in his career). At this point in his career Svatos is a grinder who isn't anything special at grinding, other then the fact that he gives it his all (which most grinders do nowadays anyway). He doesn't really serve a purpose now.

He wouldn't have helped our team at all.

Haven't checked but I'm sure someone else will grab him first, pardon the pun. He was a talent but had a couple bad injuries, iirc. Has he lost a step?

Nodl Giroux Zherdev huh?

Ignoring the fact I still dont like that Zherdev is on this team, he and Giroux looked pretty good together and Nodl can do a lot of forchecking and play some defense for them.

Still something about this group of forwards that just doesnt work for me....I dont know

This preseason has shown Nodl for what he is (or perhaps more accurately, what he is not).
Yes, the preseason has shown that Laviolette thinks of him as a Flyer, and preferable to Guerin.

How can anyone be mad at Z signing for pretty much free and being motivated to play for a huge contract?

We will see how long he stays motivated....and I dont think he fits...He isnt the kind of player that wins come playoff time. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

This reminds me of what a few people here said last offseason, that they just didn't like the team or the roster. It didn't inspire anything in them or get them excited.

I really don't understand that kind of thinking.

I mean people here may still be bummed out about Nodl making the team (not me of course) or Gagne being traded, but there's still a lot to look forward to.

I don't think we've had this devastating amount of talent offensively in a while.

I'm pretty sure that we've never iced this incredible a blueline.

Bobrovsky looks awesome at first look.

Guerin is gone for good.

Seriously, there's nothing to be depressed over. There's very little to fight over as well. That's why we're here fighting over Nodl vs. Carcillo vs. Powe when really all three will look okay, none will look great, and we're just arguing in circles.

I always liked Nodl so perfectly fine with him making the team. I hated the Gagne trade and still do, but he is gone, I am not going to dwell on it.

I dont like Zherdev....I dont like Carter on the wing with Richards....I dont like paying 1.7 million for a dman that doesnt belong in the NHL (unless of course he gets waived when Pronger is ready)

I have ZERO confidence in Michael Leighton....Bobrovsky could alleviate that, there have certainly been a lot of young goalies make noise the last few years but that remains to be seen.

We are counting on Leino to be what he was in the playoffs, and replace Gagne...coming off surgery.

We need a MAJOR bounceback year from Hartnell.

Lappy is a big piece of this team on an emotional level, and I wonder if he is even going to be able to come back.

We still cant win faceoffs....and I think the forward have taken a HUGE hit defensively

Defense is a postive and Lavi is a positive, but it doesnt outweigh my concerns, at least not yet.

Whether you agree or not, is that enough "thinking" for you????

I think the fact that people are fighting over those guys, who, as you said look ok, is in itself a good sign.

We have an awesome team this year.

He has a new wife who wants to live in America and this might be his last chance to score a huge contract.

Z has shown that he really gels with certain players (Giroux in particular) and there aren't many players on the team that will finish Giroux's passes at the rate he will.

It's a low risk, high reward signing.

If Lappy wasn't injured, Nodl wouldn't be on the team. He'd be unproductive in the AHL as opposed to the NHL. And of course Laviolette prefers Nodl to Guerin. Guerin was awful. Nodl was a lesser degree of awful. I'm not sure how you can argue that he is decent. When was Nodl doing more than he has ever done? When did he show that he could do more than he has ever done? I mean, look at his stats if you have to. Hell, they were posted here just a few posts ago. He sucks. Not to say we should just give up on him, but he has A LOT of work to do. He could start by taking shots. He had like....6 this preseason. How do you just shoot 6 shots in 7 preseason games?

Nodl was hardly awful. He was great all preseason except for a 10'x10' section around the opposing goalie.

So, like I said, he'll be okay, nothing great, and that's pretty much that. "It is what it is."

The hate for Nodl is rivaling the recent love for Rinaldo. Completely unwarranted.

Oh, I completely understand he low risk high reward thing, I dont disagree....for him. I want a cup, nothing more, nothing less....and I dont see him helping us get that in the playoffs. Even Kovalchuk couldnt do squat in the playoffs....Ovechkin has yet to make any noise. These types of players rarely win. zNow, he isnt the go to guy on this team, so that makes a HUGE difference.....I just dont see it.

I also hope Giroux doesnt end up having to cover too much for him defensively that it hurts his offensive game.

Hey, I could be 100% wrong....and I hope I am.

I think in the end the Flyers went with who they knew. Holmstrom,Testwuide,Maroon all to Adirondack. They knew what they have in Nodl. Doesnt mean he belongs on a scoring line, because he clearly doesnt. Call it whatever you want. Hes not a top 9 forward on this team.
If the Flyers thought more of Maroon or Legein they would of gotten into more then 1 preseason game.
This team has a serious dilema for that 9th forward. If there wasnt so much money tied up in the 5-8 defenseman we might have some money to spend on a scoring forward instead of having to stick someone in there who doesnt belong whether its Nodl,Carcillo or Powe.

So, he is "nothing great." Then why waste time on him at the NHL level when other forwards (Testwuide, for example) turned a lot of heads and created a lot of chances?

I don't hate Nodl. I'm honestly pulling for him because I think he could do better. But he has done nothing. Ever. Literally, he has 1 goal and 4 assists in 48 games. He is -17 for his NHL career. Add that to a -10 with the Phantoms.

Sure, he'll eat some 4th line minutes where it's really not all that important to score or create a ton of chances, but he is a defensive liability.

Funny thing is...one of the concerns going into the offseason for this team was finding someone to play in the bottom 6.

I believe when you compare Zhedev to the likes of Ovechkin, and Kovalchuk you need to look at the teams they are on. Ovechkin for example - the Caps aren't what I call a stacked team. They have questions with goaltending, defense, and not to mention their coach. When I think of BB I see a similar style to when John Stevens was here. The team has no system what so ever with their game and it shows.

Kovi and the Devils is another question. Last year they were under the system of Lemaire and his defensive ways. This year it's a new system so who knows how he does this year.

What I have seen of Zherdev I don't mind. In fact I believe to be a fan of his. The guy has a great shot to him. Do we need another forward that sucks at defense? No, we have one of those with Briere. Not to mention Carter isn't the best two-way forward but I believe last year helped him none the less.

Zherdev has only has been to the playoffs once in his career. Yeah he didnt do squat, I still wouldnt rush to judgement on the guy.

Its more a history of similar type players to Zherdev, not just his one year of suckage in the playoffs.

You also have to wonder if CBJ would have made the playoffs more than one year if this guy reached his potential

The weird thing about the Flyers is that, for some reason, they still lack an identity. Now, Homer and Snider really want to inject as much grit as possible but grit without talent just doesn't work anymore.

So, we have 2.5 scoring lines and a 4th line that will be taking a major hit if Lappy is done and Shelley receives major playing time. It won't be a horrible 4th line by any means but it will no longer be the best in the league, which ours was last season.

We have a glut of centers but no true 3rd line types, which are exceedingly valuable in the playoffs. Now, we could just have three scoring lines but that means throwing Nodl or Carcillo or someone even worse offensively onto a scoring line.

And key faceoffs will likely be an issue once again. Especially if Carter plays wing and takes fewer draws.

Now, this isn't meant to be doom and gloom as our offense should be potent (but losing Gagne for nothing is still inexcusable) and our defense, while ageing, will be excellent.

Sochi. That is Zherdev's motivation. And the fact he spent the summer practicing with Ovechkin et al shows it. He didn't get picked for the last Olympics and he needs to step up and be recognized as one of the best young Russian team players if he wants a) a big NHL contract for his lovely new bride and b) a shot at the Olympics.

As long as Zherdev keep scoring and plays some D, he'll be great. He's always mixed it up a bit and will backcheck. I think Lavy will keep him on RW to avoid having him take the boards in the left wing lock, but other than that, I don't see any downside. Esp. if Bobrovsky is going to be around for a bit, it will help both of them to have a fellow Russian speaker around.
