Canucks sign F Peter Schaefer to 1-Year, $600,000 Deal (Two-Way)

MacIntyre says the Schaefer signing is basically a done deal:

Quote:
To move closer to finalizing their roster, the Canucks have waived forward Jeff Tambellini, which means winger Peter Schaefer will be in the opening-night lineup for Vancouver's game Saturday against the Los Angeles Kings.

Schaefer, who attended training camp on a tryout, has yet to be signed but that will happen soon. He is expected to accept a two-way deal with a NHL salary in the $550,000-$600,000 range.

Two thumbs up for that deal, if and when it goes through. I like Schaefer's defensive ability. Having a capable PK forward in the bottom six will definitely be a big boost.

Out of Tambellini, Morrison and Schaefer, I thought Peter had the slimmest chance of making the team.

Good for him. Hope he lives up to it.

Well he should be on the 4th line when this team is 100% healthy... but that never happens. But depth is depth. Better than not having it.

Perhaps I need to step back and look at it this way... the question I have is this: Is the canucks talent on the bottom 6 that onoly Schaefer could really crack it? Glass and Rypien I am OK with but it just seems very odd at this point. I hope the Canucks prove me wrong.

Like I just posted in the other thread, I figure this to go down after they send Salo/Burr to LTIR. Would Schaefer be subject to waivers as he has been off for so long? or would he be signed to the Moose on his 2-way, and brought up before Sat's game?

Good thing I'm not Gilman...

For 550-600K there is absolutely 0 risk in signing schaef.. we can just waive him if his play goes down hill.

Ian Macintyre just said on twitter that Euro's don't count to the 50 contract limit. That doesn't really make sense but if it were true then Rodin's contract sliding or not wouldn't matter in relation to our contract limit.

I am not sure Burrows would qualify for the LTIR as you have to be on IR for a certain amount of time, which might be only 1 week to his return.

Wetcoaster correct me, as I am close but not 100% correct.

I don't think it's the contract limit that would hold this up at this point, but the cap juggling act the Canucks need to pull for tomorrow. I think Schaefer and Gillis have a gentleman's agreement to sign a contract once the cap space has been made available via the LTIR for Burrows and Salo. Otherwise, it's just that much more juggling that the Canucks need to do.

Not great size, but would be a phenomenal signing for the bottom 6.

Big fan of what Schaefer showed in camp. Has some puck skills, pretty quick, strong along the boards, and a great PK presence. And like I've been saying this is well he still has significant rust from a year away from pro hockey. I think he can only trend upwards as he gets his game legs back in action.

He'll start on the third line with Malhotra-Hansen and we'll see Torres shift up to that second line until Burrows is healthy at which point Schaefer will most likely shift down to the fourth line or 13th forward position depending on how Glass/Desbiens are performing.

Scheaffer looked pretty good at pre-season intensity, looking forward to seeing what he has as games take on meaning.

Showed his PK prowess during the preseason and is willing to accept any role in order to stick with the team. If this is true, then welcome back to the Canucks organization!

D'oh. I even proofread it the first time and had to re-add Ehrhoff because I'd forgotten him. I need more coffee.

No but by the time he qualifies for LTIR he will be back within that week or 2. I supopose if it is 2 weeks, 2 weeks is cap relief, but not much on a 2 mil contract.

I believe the rule is you cannot place someone on LTIR until he is out for 3 weeks. Again someone correct me if i'm wrong.

I think it's ten games.

If the Canucks "send down" Hodgson (even if they plan on keeping him) and Lack, they will be close to being able to put Salo on the opening day roster before putting him on LTIR in order to maximize the space. In which case they could then immediately recall Hodgson, if they wanted to.
