Toews is a little high, while Hossa is criminally low. I'm kind of expecting Hossa to be our best player this year. That's saying a lot (about what I think of him).

I agree, but Its funny. This board will flip....

And I think Hossa is good for 40-40-80 about a PPG pace this year

I think Keith will have another great year, not quite as good offensively though

Kane = 95 pts. Give or take 5

Toews = PPG + Selke Nomination

I think being the best player at the Olympics and the NHL playoffs may have had something to do with it.

If you asarting an NHL franchise today, I'd pick him over Malkin easily.

I'm not saying Toews shouldn't be on the list or anything, just saying he's too high on the list. Third best player in the NHL and he's never put up 70 points in a season?

Go email the TSN experts, they're the ones who made the list. No one here did.

I never really care about these lists, but I am glad Toews is that high and that 6 Hawks made the top 50. And I only care because it'll make other posters from around the boards pull their hair out and get worked up over nothing.

Example A above.

Anyway, Toews is one of my favorite players. Has been since he was drafted. I just don't think he's the third best player in the NHL. If you want to talk about two way play, Zetterberg and Datsyuk are as good or better than Toews defensively, Zetterberg has a gold medal, a Cup, and a Smythe and has been better offensively than Toews -- but I'm not arguing that he's the third best player in the NHL.

Third overall just seems too high to me. You guys seem a little defensive.

I mostly agree with that list with minor alternations, however Toews is far too high. He is not in any way superior to Datsyuk, Backstorm, Sedin or Malkin. Hossa is also surprisingly low.

Okay, I guess there's no point in discussing this article (or any article written by the "experts") then. I was just wondering if you guys agree that Toews is the third best player in the league.

Sounds about right to me.

Keith and Hossa are 1 & 2 of course although you could make an argument for moving Toews higher .

Certainly. If I look halfway down the list I think, should I place Toews after Chara at #23? No. Just after Kovalchuk and ahead of Nash? No. After Datsyuk? As much as I respect him and for all the many killing shots he has dealt the Hawks through the years not anymore. And like the other poster said if I were a GM I would take him ahead of slack-jawed, underachieving (despite his numbers) Malkin. I wouldn't trade him for Crosby or Ovechkin, but that doesn't mean I expect him to be #1 on this or any other list. I have to say though, when such esteem for a player is apparently shared by 25 "experts" gathered by a reputable publication - despite the player never once scoring 70 points in a season - it definitely validates the thought.

I thought he was our best player last year (when healthy). Sure he was disappointing point wise, but he was ****** fantastic at virtually every aspect of the game that doesn't show up in the stat book.

I agree with both of those points.

I also don't think Seabrook should be in the top 50, but unlike most of the posters on the general board (who are flipping out over the Hawks players on the list...pretty funny) I was happy to Sharp at #50. He's often underrated.

hossa

Hossa is one of few superstars willing to do 'dirty work' the one not visible on scoresheet, also his injury did cut his stats.
Hopefully now he is ready to show us he belongs way higher on that Top50 list.

All these types of lists are heavily influenced by the "flavour of the day" and "What have you done for me lately".

For example, I guarantee Sedin would have had trouble making the top 50 without his performance last season (granted it was truly excellent). Same goes for Miller in goal.

Whichever team wins the Cup this season will miraculously have 5+ players on the next annual list as well.

No Voukoun? Really? Right... big market teams have their players get top priority and automatically rank higher just because.

Lidstrom 26th? Right because he's getting too old and we're bored of him... next.

No list is going to have everyone agreeing with everyone at each rank... but I like the lists that look a little more long term than just who did well last week.

Too much Paris Hilton/Lady Gaga in this list and not enough Led Zep.

It's as easy as it is.

This is a list based on last year and what is expected for the upcoming season.

and after this, Vokoun isn't Top50. Seabrook belongs on this list like Toews and Keith are ok in the Top5

Me too.

I also thought he was far and away our best player in the playoffs as well. Its about time some fans realize that a player needs to be evaluated on his IMPACT, not just by his point totals. Outside of maybe Datsyuk, there isn't another player that can flat out dominate every phase of the game (even when he's not putting up points) like Hossa can. It really doesn't matter if you aren't putting up a lot of goals/points if you are holding the opposition to zilch. That's exactly what he did in the playoffs.

When healthy, Hossa should be in the top 3 in Selke voting EVERY year. He really is a man amongst boys out there.

Captained his team to a Stanley Cup. He also was the best player on the team. While being one of the best defensive forwards in the game. At 22 years.

What is so hard about that?

I wrote what I did because you asked us to defend Toews being 3rd on the list as if Hawks fans had compiled the top 50. But to answer your question, do I think Toews is top 3? No, not yet, but he might be able to get there some day.

Toews has had 2 good years and 1 truly excellent year so far in his young career. There are others you can rank ahead of him that have enjoyed sustained success in the league for a longer period of time, but you can't disregard last season as an anomaly when Toews has been a winner wherever he's gone. The hockey world obviously thought he had a special year with the Olympics and Cup run, but it's fashionable around the boards to still dismiss Toews as overrated (not referring to you).

One great year doesn't make him a top 3 player in the game, but seeing as these lists are made annually, it's easy to understand after the year he had why TSN chose to put him where they did.

If you're talking point production alone, Toews is not top 3. Thats clear. But I would venture to say that outside of Crosby, Toews has intangibles through the roof like no one at age 22. Add in his two-way play and his scoring and you have a top three guy.

I would also rank Parise slightly above Kaner.
