I might be wrong here, but also wouldn't Hordichuk be subject to re-entry waivers, while Peters is exempt?

With the $ they're losing, if they actually want to use Hordichuk, then any penny they save getting rid of Peters helps.

Also, maybe it's a matter of them being at their maximum number of contracts?

Could also be something where they're trying to do the "right thing" for a player by giving him a chance with someone who has some interest.

Like SOB, Hordi wasn't assigned anywhere yet so he's not subject to recall waivers.

Don't think Hordichuk was ever assigned to the Moose so no he wouldn't be eligible for recall waivers.

EDIT: What VanEric said and I see you meant 'should Hordichuk be sent down at a later date'.

yes, he's exempt, as he makes less than $105K in the minors.

EDIT: What VanEric said.
I think he was asking hypothetically.. Hordichuk would have been demoted if he'd stayed around, and then if brought up would have had to go through re-entry waivers.

He is a terrible player, no doubt about it. If we dress him, it's purely as a deterrent to someone like George Parros.

Unfortunately Hordichuk had become too well mannered since his days of jumping Sean Avery. Peters will not hesitate to take a suspension or a misconduct going after someone. If you're going to have a goon around in your organization, at least have one who is willing to do something violent and dumb for his team.

Got it afterwards. Made the edit. Should have taken more time to read his post more carefully.

You must've forgotten a , right? Peters is going straight to the Moose, he was already waived and re-assigned to the minors.
I don't have much faith in AV resisting the urge to play with his new goon.

Yep. Doesn't need to get any more complicated than this.

Good we needed a heavyweight for a handful of regular season games anyways.

Save money get a bigger more intimidating heavyweight.

I couldn't agree more.

Hordichuk was always game to scrap, but unfortunately he was also game to take a bad penalty far too often.

Peters is a Goon - pure & simple. Play a VERY simple game, protect your teammates at any cost - and sit on the bench.

If the Canucks are playing the Flames/Oilers etc. - they now have the option of calling up Peters to be a policeman so guys like Ivanans & MacIntyre have someone to answer to.

Desbienes and Rypien are a bit out of their league squaring off with monsters like that - Peters isn't.

This is a great move money wise & otherwise.

As for the trade. This is Gillis showing some respect to Hordichuk. Nothing more. Peters will likely be sent down.

EDIT: Didn't realize he was already waived and assigned to minors. Tidies that up nicely.
Further to this, I think Gillis' last couple of moves shows the respect the Canucks are showing to their players, and making Vancouver an even more desireable place for NHL players - they won't be shunned or buried, and their wishes will be accomodated.

A minor move, but it means a lot.

Geez, nice move Gillis. Get an HW on a two-way contract so he can go to the minors and be called up for added grit if necessary, and makes the minimum cap hit at the highest level.

Nice job, and a good show of respect to Hordi...should bode well amongst the team and future acquisitions.

So Peters is exempt from re-entries, and since he has been waived already, he doesn't have to be waived again until he accrues X number of games or spends X number of days on the roster, correct? (I can't remember the numbers)

If so, this is potentially a great trade. You get a legit fighter who you can bring up/down depending on if you need him.

PLUS, they save $700,000+ in real money, AND they get to look like a nice classy organization for finding Hordichuk a place to go.

As much as I'd never think I would say this about a Darcy Hordichuk for Andrew Peters trade, this looks like a great trade.

gillis seems to be able to trade anyone for something. i'm not sure he knows he's a real GM and not playing NHL '11.

I'm glad Hordichuk will have a chance to stay in the NHL. As much as I dislike him as a hockey player I respect him as a person and wish him the best.

Peters is cheap protection for our rookies. If we need to call him up for some reason he's cheap and while not a great fighter at least he has some size. But odds are we never see him in the NHL.

I didn't even know that Hordichuk used to play for the Panthers. Second time around for him there now.

Yeah, this is a great move purely because it makes Vancouver an even more attractive destination for free agents. Peters is a scrub but he's tough, on a two-way contract, and cleared waivers. I like it. A lot.

He went from 58 to 44 to 28 to 29 GP and his FMs went from 17 - 12 - 11 - 9.
