Ian Laperriere (Feb. 10 update: still having problems with indoor lighting)

RT @BroadStBull: Nodl will be sent to Phantoms to get #Flyers down to 23 players.

RT @BroadStBull: Ian Laperriere goes on short-term IR. He could miss the season with post-concussion sydrome.#Flyers

(BroadStBull is Sam Carchidi)

Cap management. Obviously Nodl wasn't going to be in the opening night lineup, and LTIR can be done retroactively.

A Flyers source confirmed to me today that Ian Laperriere would not play for the remainder this season as a result of post-concussion symptoms resulting from blocking a shot with his face last April.

The worse news, according to a separate source, is that Laperriere may never play hockey professionally again.

According to the second source, the Flyers are debating whether to put Laperriere on the long-term injury list or to have him announce his retirement and simply deal with the cap hit for the next two seasons because of Laperriere's age.

...

Also, Andreas Nodl was sent down to the Phantoms today, but will be recalled tomorrow to play against the Penguins. The move was purely for financial purposes.

But...but...but...Nodl is a solid 3rd liner! With Billy G gone, he should have been a lock!

Yeah, gonna be hard for Nodl to play with Giroux or Carter while wearing a Phantoms sweater.

Sucks for Nodl.

I really, really hope Lappy isn't done.

That is a morose diagnosis (source: Frank at the Inq.):

Doctors are apparently having a tough time distinguishing his symptoms and whether his eye injury is causing them or his brain injury.

Why not put him on long term IR now. Not sure i follow the logic there as he clearly wont be playing anytime soon.

Nodl Is teh AWESOME!!!

Who else not only lacks offense but lacks physicality too? How can anyone add as much as he can to the Giroux Zherdev line?

They cant put him on LTIR unless:
1. they can prove he will be out long-term (ie Doctor's ruling of 6-8 weeks) So if the doctors are confused (See MSEs link) that is why he isnt on the LTIR yet
or
2. if he has already been out while. So once he has been out a certain period of time (24 days I think) he can be put on the LTIR retroactively

Because you can replace the salary on LTIR but it has to be instantaneous. Just keeping that option available. They had no plans on using Nodl for at least tomorrow, so no point, and they save a few dollars on the cap.

Right, i just cant see lappy coming back in the next 2 months, if at all. I guess he based all the baseline testing though as he wouldnt have been cleared for camp at all right?

I've said it a few times also, but it wouldn't shock me if Laviolette went to 7 defensemen at times. He did it in Carolina.

Not to start the season, way to early. With Pronger hurting who knows. Hope they dont rush him back at all. You know he will still play 25 minutes tomorrow if he plays.

He also didn't have a guy like Shelley who he couldn't play for more than 5 mins there, did he?

With Pronger not 100%, this is actually a good time to do it.

Not on a regular basis, but since they're going to carry 8 defensemen, might as well use them.

So the offensive juggernaut Andreas NoGOAL gets sent down..what a surprise

As far as Lappy....I think he should retire and not draw things out and risk long-term health implications. It will help the Flyers more if he did it. Not a Primeau situation but it would be best he hang em up...

He would have to be Rathje'd, not Primeau'd.

this is one change the need to make in the next cba. If you have to retire because of injury(legit injury), shouldnt count against the cap.

Yeah an "overall" cap hit right..like a Rathje situation? I just would rather put it to bed rather than have a questionable roster spot...

Anyway..here's Meltzer's take

Quote:
The Flyers made an on-paper roster move in order to get their roster under the player limit in time for the deadline. With the club having decided to carry eight defensemen on the opening night roster-- as a source within the club said all summer would likely be the case -- the team has loaned Andreas Nodl to the Phantoms.

Ian Laperriere has been placed on IR, and will eventually be moved to LTIR. Michael Leighton temporarily remains on the active roster, but will eventually be placed on IR or LTIR. Once the club gets a handle on its IR situation, Nodl will be recalled. The Austrian is likely to start the season as the 13th forward, anyway, as Jody Shelley will be in the starting lineup

No since he is 35+ it will be different then the rathje situation. We get a real cap hit not a LTIR cap hit.

if he doesnt retire officially, he needs to be put on the LTIR
