How can teams like washington and pitt tank and turn themselves into cup contenders, and the isles can be terrible for 7 yrs with no improvement?
Horrible management, even worse building, inability to attract star UFAs, a history of horrible trades, signing a young goaltender to a ridiculously long contract, etc.
I often wonder what that team would have been like if they didn't trade Luongo.
Always consistently competitive in a tough hockey market, without superstars, good on them.
However the main reason (besides being in Nashville) they're not mentioned is playoff series won: 0
Compare what David Poile gets out of the Nashville Predators, the resources he has to work with and the numerous less than advantageous circumstances that he faces annually with the job Glen Sather has done in his situation with the resources available to him.
Personally, I think David Poile is one of the two or three best GMs in the league.
Despite not having great playoff success(its been decent advancing to 2nd round twice isn't bad), the Rangers, IMO, have been fairly successful post-lockout.
And as far as organizational long-term health, they're in better shape now with all of these solid young players and prospects, then the organization has been since when I first started following the Rangers (about '92).
They've been consistently average, as in barely making the plaoffs or barely not.
Not god enough for me. I would be much happier if they finished last in the league than 8th in the East. A first overall pick sets you up for a decade and a half.

Oh absolutely agree, same applies for Trotz behind the bench. Only mentioned the playoff thing to point out why they arent considered among the best in the west.

I think anyone would have kept gomez over drury....however, one of those contracts had to go and gomez's was the only one that was potentially movable...not only because of the nmc but because of other teams interest

Oh, I agree. But at that time, almost everyone was glad to be rid of Gomez, myself included. But looking back on it, I'd love to have him back cause, overpaid, or not, he'll still put up his usual #'s.
Up until the game against the Flyers last season, the shootout has helped the Rangers as far as success since the lockout.
The rules are the rules, so it't not like the Rangers did not win fair and square; however, it would be nice if the Rangers had more "concrete" wins this year.
