Well, you should have 'liked' my post, too, seeing as how I was first to mention Avery's great game

A strong team effort. Hats off to Stepan for a great NHL debut!

Please bench Eminger. I think he looks lost out there at times, including preseason.

Let's see how Stepan does in the next few games before we get ahead of ourselves here. He had a great game, and there's nothing to complain or be concerned about.

What is concerning is how bad we looked in the last 15 minutes of the game.

Bad luck on JT's part. Looks like it was just an accidental bump that hit him at the wrong angle. I hate seeing players get taken out after something like that.

Anyone at the game, could you hear Step's mom and sister screaming at the rink? On TV they were so loud. Awesome.

Does Stepan have Messier's mean streak? And I don't mean a mere willingness to be physical. Messier was truly vicious when he felt occasion warranted it, and the fear he could induce definitely helped him - and others - put up numbers.

There was everything to like about Stepan's game tonight, but that facet of Messier's game, I didn't see that.
By the time Messier got to the NHL he was actually toned way down.

As a junior he was a beast. Would beat up the other teams fighter and then go and challenge their entire bench.

I know the first goal was lucky, but Stepan had a hat trick in his first NHL game...against Ryan Miller!

per Gross,

Here are some other hat trick facts, courtesy of the Rangers:
* Derek Stepan is the first Ranger in franchise history to record a hat trick in his NHL debut.
* His three goals tied the Rangers’ franchise record for most goals in an opening-night game, becoming just the second player in team history to record a hat trick in the season opener. Ron Murphy also tallied a hat trick in the 1955-56 season opener on Oct. 7, 1955 at Chicago.
* The last Ranger rookie to register a hat trick was Jan Hlavac on Feb. 11, 2000 vs. Boston.
* Derek Stepan is the 26th Ranger to record a hat trick in their rookie season.
* The last Ranger to register a hat trick at Buffalo was Petr Nedved on Feb. 25, 2000.

Nothing lucky about being able to deflect a puck coming at you at decent speeds. He deflected it towards the net and it found its way in off of Myers skate.

Oh so you didn't get to enjoy the wonderful Buffalo broadcast, lucky you.

They messed up soo many players.

Christensen was Fedotenko
Anisimov was Rozival
Gaborik was Dubinsky
Lundqvist was Lund-something, dunno wtf it was.
It was Lundstrom... whoever that is....

Avery is a player.

I hate Eminger.

Got two cans of beer and popcorn thrown at me, not bad. And I wasn't doing anything but talking to my girlfriend and standing and clapping when the Rangers scored.

ALSO a girl right in front of us got hit in the head with a puck during warm ups...blood everywhere, it got me pumped for some hockey lol.

1-0 feels good.
Nice... I never had anything thrown at me. Just got jeered a lot but usually in a friendly way. I really wish I found a way to get up there for the game (especially knowing the result, would've been a fantastic time).

That was the lucky part. But yes, it was a really nice redirection. Nice heads-up play.

I remember watching on TV the hat trick goal by Hlavac like it was yesterday. The high point of Jan's career.

There was a big crowd b/c it was Dodge Hat Giveaway Night, plus the game was on ESPN or ESPN2.

So after the CzechMates combined beautifully to score his 3rd goal it seemed like all the hats given away were thrown right back on the ice. A great sight it was.

Plus I remember that night because Ray Bourque looked like he all but gave up on the Bruins. Not one of his better games.

If it didn't go off Myers Avery would have almost certainly put it in anyway. He was standing right in front of the crease waiting for it. I guess he was lucky that it was his goal and not Avery's because Avery never got a chance to touch it

The kid could have had 5 goals tonight. He's insanely slippery. D-men are going to have nightmares covering both Stepan and Gaborik if they play together

Did anybody catch the Boyle/Boog two-on-one breakaway?
I was screaming pass it! pass it!

I kinda liked Buffalo's jersey.

Stepan gave me chills the moment they announced the first goal.

Dubi will never live down giving him a kiss. Just nothing but live ammunition for the haters.

Was that another Buffalo player taking a dive?

Emminger has to go ...get Mc D up here.

I havent seen enough love for Sauer .... the kid looked good.
Girardi was outstanding tonight....include how he played the second half of last season and I think we got ourselves a very good d man.

Hank lets in 2 softies...Gaby doesnt score and we still win!

This franchise is producing some serious talent..... I think we might have heard the last of the Fire Sather chants.

When you kiss another guy on lips on national television you're asking for it, I'm sorry. I honestly don't know what Dubinsky was thinking. Are they a couple or something?

Oh well, both had a great game.

Everyone played solid, except Eminger. Del Zotto looked flat out good defensively, utilizing his poke check quite a few times.

I'm sorry, but Lundy was a train-wreck tonight. I'm not saying that only because of the 2 goals, and I am a huge advocate of Lundy and think he is top 3 in the NHL. But every shot scared me. He was incredibly slow post-to-post.

I have to completely 200% disagree with you on that. One individual game doesn't always paint an accurate picture of a player.

He had a few beauties last season, and he showed quite a flashes of slick playmaking ability this pre-season. He's never going to get by on his skill alone, but he's absolutely got an above average combination of determination and skill. I'm looking for a big year from him. I think he's capable of ~25 goals, ~30 assists this year. Especially playing with Dubinsky and Anisimov who look considerably faster, stronger, and most importantly more definitive with and without the puck than last season. It's incredibly early, but they seem to have really bought into Tortorella's aggressive pressure system, so far.
